FROM TRINITY TO DUKE >
Newspaper Humorist Says He Is Op
posed To It
Trinity college jn Durham, N. C.
ifj to become Duko University', and
1 hereby receive an endowment of $25,
000,000. I am sorry, writes Heywood,
Brown In the New York World. The
news dispatch says that the board of
trustees voted unanimously fbr'.^thd
change. ^ Even if there had been na
more than one, I could wish that
someone had stood out against the
change.
Duke is well enough as a namej but
Trinity is a good'name, too, and alter
all the college, was Trinity until an
obliging and encroaching jnillionaire
came along to change it. There
should lie a branch of' the Lucy Stone
league which would encourage col
leges to keep their own names and r&J
sist the blandishments of ppople prof
ering endowments. The suggestion is
loo strong that Mr. Duke has bought j
the place and asked tp-have it"*wrap
ped up and sent around -to his house.]
Benefactors of education and other
good works abrogate to themselves
far too-many rights in distributing
money. People who help colleges are
forever impairing their gifts with
conditions. Every institution in the
country is embarrassed with bequests
founding a scholarship for a promis
ing student of English, who sfiall' be
red headed and the daughter of a
practicing physician in Vermont. Any
body who wants to give money to .v
university should do no more than
writd a little note saying: "Here is j
.?ome"money which I thought you
might be able to use. Do what you
will with it." <
The one who gives earns for him
self honor in heaven, but most of the
beneficent cannot resist the tempta
tion of going in for a little glory
on earth as a. sideline.
Now that Trinity has become Duke
i trust the institution will make some
provision to recompense the students
who decorated their rooms with ban
ners inscribed "Trinit# 1928" and
those who bought college pipes. And,
think of the* football players who
earned by dint of great determination, |
the honor of wearing a white "T" on.
their sweaters. Before the big game
each year they were urged to* die if]
necessary for dear old Trinit^r. Will
it, I wonder, be. just as easy to die
for Duke? And what kbout the eol-.j
lege song ? There must be an anthem
in which the sun sets behind the bills
of Trinity. When ne*t the sun comes
'round and ftnds that these are *ow
t he hills of 'jCh^/Woi it jtfat'W
the same ^ld way or wiUJt feel that |t]
cannot be bothered and cbnlused b#j
such sweeping changes and pass by ?
Of course, $25,000,000 id a large
#^um of money, but standards' in fb*
tunes Vary, and there may come an
other century in which such aa
amount becomes the merest trifle.
In that day J. Augustus Tinkham
"iay get a longing to see his name
over a lecture hall, and what is to
prevent him from offering a still
larger endowment and having the
Duke stripped from the walls and
out of the long cheer, and substitut
ing for it the name Tinkham? -I
No, I think it would havte been'
smarter for the trustees in Durham to
have kept the same and lost the mil
lions.
