Westwood, Cgl., Dec. 22. Mount
Lassen, the only active volcano in
continental United States, began an
eruption of sipoko and gases at 4:30
"o'clock this afternoon. Residents of
Westwood declare it the largest
eruption of the mountain since 1915.
Mattie Jones, negress, was con
victed in a Philadelphia court Sat
urday of first degree murder. She
will likely go to the electric chair.
Benny Hill, driving his car at tho
rate of 126.9 miles an hour, won the
250-mile automobile race at Culver

all negro tenant houses and Home

by Mr. W. K. Watkins and were
sold a short while ago to Mr. J. L,
Moseley. They were built very close
together and there being no fire pro
tection it was impossible to stop tho
flames Partial insurance was car
ried by Mr. Moseley on all of the
houses.
Bank robbers got $40,000 from the
Royal bank at Nanaimo, British Co
lumbia, Friday and overlooked a pay
roll of $100,000. A Canadian destroy
er followed the robbers in an effort to
head them off before the gang reach
ed the United States.
