Kershaw county, to serve a three
months' term.
Anderson's home is /at St. Loui-i

make philanthropic plans which lu?
failed to carry out.
One of these was the wii'ltVg of th<
main cull block prior to the time a
'complete system of wires had been,
installed. Anderson wanted a light
for his ceil; and on learning that
there were no connections, said that
he was an electrician and offered to ;
wire not only his own cell but also j
those of other prisoners who had no
lights. Later he decided he wanted j
a radii) set in his cell; and Captain
Evans gave him permission to have :
a receiving outfit.
Captain Evans told the prisonerl
that there was not room for a set in .
the cell; Anderson said that he would J
arrange the radio outfit in the lobby j
of the cell block in order that all j
the prisoners might receive the bene- !
lit of the radio entertainment. Hut
of the lights or radio, Captain 10 vans j
said he never saw a sign.
On leaving the prison Anderson
said he was going to head for the
North and that the sun would never
shine on his heels on Southern soil,
according to the captain of the guard.
Penitentiary officials say, however,
that the Missourian has made several
visits back to the institution, and on
one occasion was warned away from
the prison wall by the side of which

Soon, after his last visit he was
arrested in Camden and chained with
having1 taken money from a c?i*h reg
ister in a hotel. Me had replaced, the
money, but was brought to trial and j

stealing: from a house. He pleaded
guilty and before Judge \V. H. Town
send the prisoner expressed a prefer
ence to a county chaingang over the
penitentiary; contending that "they
will make it harder for me." The
matter was referred to H. G. Carri
son, chairman of the county board of
commissioners; and Anderson was
sent back tw the penitentiary.
Edisto Island, which has always
[ specialized in cotton, is just at this
I
i time proving to be a cotton-growers
paradise, according to the local cotton
raisers. While haavy rains are re
ported to have interferred with the
cultivation of cotton on the main
land, and numerous boll weevils are
said to have made inroads, the sea
island has missed these draw-backs
and the cotton is beginning to fruit
heaviiy.
Between 500 and 1,000 Columbia
grasshoppers left the capital city
last week for an extended Visit t

ital city the nimble insects will be the
guests of the United States depart
ment of agriculture. Dr. Phillip Lu
ginbili. United States government en
tomologist, stationed in Columbia,
received a message from the agricul
tural deportment in Washington some
time ago asking for a barrel full of
the locust family insects. The re
quest came from Dr. N. N. A. Cobb,
of the bureau /of of plant industry.
The gradhdppers are to be used in
experimental work for the purpose of
determining whether or not they are
parasites. Under the direction o?
Dr. Luginbill the members of the Col
lege Place Boy Scouts, of which he Is
leader, journeyed about five mile*
from Columbia on the Asylum road,
two days last Week, and by means of
nets, succeeded in capturing the
jumping creatures and putting them
in a barrel for safe keeping. Five
boys were employed each day.
