Death followed blood poisoning re*
waiting from the infection of a blister
received last week while the boy was
playing tennis with his older brother,
John, <iii the White House court.
The poison swept through the hoy's
entite system. Since Inst night, when
his vitality gave way under the strain
of struggling against the infection,
his death -had been only a matter of
hours,
For three days and nights the Pres
ident and Mrs. Cool idge- were con
stantly at the boy's bedside at the
Walter Keed Army Hospital, whither
the boy wasi taken on July f> in order
that there might be immediately
available the resources of medical
science.
They gave up trying to pass the
nights it t the White. House. Instead
quarters wito fitted up in rooms ad
joining the one in which the hoy lay
lighting a losing battle with death.
Tonight (lie grief-st lieken father
and mother returned to the White
Home. Their vigil had been in vain.

four hours after the physicians hail
abandoned hope of recovery.
Although the President and Mrs. i
Coolidge are bearing up with remark
able fortitude under the strain, the |
effect of the ordeal is plainly visible
hi both. The stricken mother leaned
'heavily on the arm of the father,
whose drawn face bore tragic test i - i
mony to the weight of the blow.
John, the older brother, who had j
passed the last two days at the hos
pital, was left at the White House
earlier in the night that he might be
spared the sorrow of seeing his chum |
die.
In accordance with the President's'
wish* to keep his personal lift* sep- ?
arate from his public career, only t h?_? ;
simplest services will be held. Some '
service, it is expected, will take place J
in Washington, but the final rites will
be in Northampton, Mass., the Presi
dent's home, where Calvin was born
and where he played in the days be
fore his father became a world figure.
Automobiles Collide in Dark.
Two automobiles collided on the j
Camden highway near the double
trestle Sunday night after dark, with I
lather bad results to both cars, a
b'uick and a Ford. The Huick was :
driven by Hob Bailey, colored, of Kl
gin, and the Ford contained two occu
pants, .1. H. Fowler and .1. H. ('one,
two young white men of Charlotte.
The wheels and fenders of both cars

George Peters, alleged to have
gained money under false pretense#
from several Orangburg merchant#
by representing himse.lt as a Hales
man of a Showcase eon tern plead
guilty to such a charge before Mag

was xentepced to serve twenty days
or pay $25 on each count. He took
t h?* days and is stated that he is
serving his time in the county jail
as he was deemed unfit physically to
work on the chaingang.
Peters, or whatever his name was,
he having gone by, several aliases,
was arrested in other cities on the
Same charge. His scheme, according
to alleged victims, >vas to take an
order for plate glass, showcases and
the liko and receive a cash deposit on
the order then ko to another town
and do the same thing. Inquiry by
this merchant revealed no such com
pany as this man claimed he was
traveling for, stated this merchant.
Orangeburg Times- Democrat.
George Peters, alias George Millett,
was released from the Kershaw
County jail a few weeks ago, his
victims here agreeing to drop the
rlnrrges against him. After his sen
tence expires at' Orangeburg there
an- charge-s awaiting him from Flor
ence and Union and there may be
other towns. ' Millett was tirst
at Grwfivflit' ati<| carried to
Newberry where, lie was given a six
months sentence. He has served about
one yeai in state prisons and jails
in this state.
! Wreck on Huh Line.
The Charlotte-Columbia Bus Lfne
encountered a wreck about four miles
north <?f Lancaster Friday morning
when a Chevrolet car driven by a
negro ran into it, both cars sustain
ing considerable damage. None of
the passengers were injured but all
received a severe jolt. The Chevrolet
car, it was said, was running without
brakes, but it is not known if this
caused the 'wreck. F. S. Cannon,
proprietor of the Hotel Royal,
