Then dumping Partin, the guard, they forced a negro truck driver to take them to Method, where they took charge of the truck and drove it as far as it would go. In Durham at about 2 o'clock Saturday morning they captured M. D. Cline, just returning from a fishing party In a Studcbaker car and made him take them to Greensboro. After passing through the city, including Main street, they went to the outskirts, ? threw ("line out, beat him up badly, and robbed him of a revolver and $H0 in cash. Then returning to the city they got live gallons of gas at a fill ing station and left no trnce of their whereabouts after G o'clock Sunday morning. Wood was in the penitenti ary for the murder of A. Starnes had been sent up from Forsythe county for five year.?, ('line, after being beaten up by the convicts, crawled to a nearby house from which he telephoned the alarm, ? >ut it was too late to be of immediate value' in the tracing of the fugitives. Till! Hp or t he tongue, for iDHlHiicf. Is mom sensitive to sweet and uoltl tastes, while it '?* far less capable of perceiving a bitter time than any other part of the organ. Same person# are unable to percehe any hitter taste when quinine is applied to the tip of the tongue only. At the back of tbe tongue the bitterness of the drag Is perceived at once. An explanation of the curious se lective powers exhibited by the tongue ts that a variety of nerve fibers are present in that organ, each kind ha Ing sensitive only to oue of the four principal classes of taste, These nerve fibers are distributed In vsrjriug num bers over different parts ef the tongue. At Jhe tip, for instance, the nerves which are sensitive te sweet and acid stimuli are moat numerous, and ac cordingly in that locality those taste* are the ones most readily perceived. At the hark of the tongue, on the other hand, thinrerve fibers concerned in Jbe perception ef bitterness prevail over the others. A singular proof of the fact that on particular parte of the tongue one aert of nerve fttoere may overpower and mask the eflfeet ef snother sort is furnished by placlug aulphate of magnesia on the back ef the tongue. At first only a strong bitter taste Is perceived, but when the nerves pro ducing the bitter taste are paralysed, as tbey may be by the application of the drug called gymnema, without af fecting the other nerves, then a slight acid taste becomes evident. Thtfs ctm our allgbtest sensations of pleasure or pain sre the result of a complicated syetem of nerve fibers and nerve endings, and while we can begin to perceive that' certain nerves posses* certain powers, or are sensi tive to certain Impressions and not te others, yet the cause of these differ ences retaaln to be discovered. Body Attitudee Affect Thoughts. After 3,200 testa Chester Vf. Darrow of the department of psychology at the University of Chicago has decided that bodily attitudes affect emotional thouglft. In general the person with a smiling attitude will think pleasant thoughts more readily, and one with a sneer will more easily register unpleasant thoughts. Hodlty postures also are an Important element; he added, the subject standing erect and straight responding inure readily to pleasant thoughts than th? person In a slouching posture.
