MR. Tll.l.KR VICTIM OF STORM
Former Kershaw County Man Din at
llottpilul From Injuria.
W. Henry Tiller, M, 2226 (?ei vais
street, Columbia, who was injured
Wednesday afternoon when his farm
houM- at Adams mill caved in as a
result of the tornado, di?sd at the
Baptist hospital last evening about
o'cl.uk
The death of Mr. Tiller will bung
aorrow to hundred* pf friend# in Co
lumbia. He was a man of winning
personality and his friends were
legion.
Mr. Tiller was of a jovial disposi- j
tirm and even after he was brought
to the hospital, maimed and broker;
by 'the heavy timber that fell upon
him during the tornado, he was j
joking and amMlng. He ^related the j
details of the tragedy to members
of his family, and from all appear
<; i litst it seemed as if he
might recover.
The injuied man took a sudden re
lapse yesterday .and by late afternoon
was fast sinking.
Mr. Tiller was plowing Wednesday
morning when he noticed the ap
proaching storm. He hat! been out ai
his farm for two or three days, an 1
was endeavoring to get his ground in
shape for the year's crop. Seeing the.
heavy, low hanging clouds he hurried
to the house and was in the act of
lowering a window when the wind
took the structure with all its ?force
and crushed it to the ground.
There was hardly a strip of timber
large enough to make a stretcher to
bear Mr. Tiller to the roadside, so
that he might be hurried Jo a Colum
bia hospital. Neighbors who had es
eaped during the tornado hurried to
him and after much labor succeeded
in making a stretcher for the maimed
man, whose head and body were bad
ly hurt by the falling timber. <
Even after Mr. Tiller had been
placed upon the stretcher the rescue
party had to cut its way to the high
way. Many trees had fallen, and had
barricaded the branch road leading
out to the main thoroughfare. The
injured man arrived at the hospital
late in the afternoon, and everything
was done to save his life.
W. Henry Tiller was born at
Bethune, Kershaw County. He had
lived in Columbia practically all of
his life. Besides Miss Lessie Tiller,
his daughter, Mr. Tiller leaves two
l children, Mrs. Thomas W. Hornsby of
| Col umbia and Charles E. Tiller of
Turner, Mich. He is also survived by
one sister. Mrs. Waters of Bethune.
