list on March 18, was released from
the (ireenville county jail Wednesday
on $3,600 bond. J. B. Stockley, whoj
in co-indicted with Tinsley is still held
in default of $1,000 bond. The two
defendants were granted bail by As
sociate 'Justice T. P. Cothran at a
hearing held at noon Tuesday.

was the closest and moat intimate
personal friend of the late President
Harding. Therefore what he says
might be road with deep interest and
understanding. The following lead
ing editorial from tho Washington
Post aptly describes tho situation of
the Republican leaders of the capital:
"Members of tho Ropublican party
through the United .States are dazed
and shamed by the lack of leadership
in thoir great organization. Thoy can
not understand why the Republican
party is subjected to the most humil
iating and damaging charges without
arousing tho resentment of a single
leader in congress. The leaders are
jnot only. defied but insulted/ and they
take their punishment as if they de
served it. Tho administration is vili
fied (and the entire Republican organi
zation brought into contempt and
worse than contempt. It ia even
?charged with protecting criminals,
and with being itself a participant in
crime. The government is terribly
injured by the wholesale accusations
heaped against the party in power. |
Paralysis has overtaken congress.
There is widespread defiance of the
law. The people are beginning to
suffer because the party to which
they confided the government is un
able to function.
"What is the matter with the Re
publican leaders? Can it be true that
they are trembling for fear that fur
ther revelations will confirm tho
truth of what now seem to be in
famous calumnies? Or are they
craven weaklings who are afraid to
-stand up for truth and right, becauso
of a selfish desire to keep their own
individual names out of the current
scandals : One yr luv wtlicr supposi
tion seems to be the truth.
"Scoundrels or moral cowards ? it
is a hard alternative, and 'tho people
shrink' from imposing judgment. Bjut
the people will not forever. Repub
licans by the millions, whose pride in
their party ia a part of their life, art
not disposed to tolerate the coNvardice
of their leaders in congress when
abominable allegations are made
attacking the integrity of their party.
"There is beginning to be wide
spread belief that there is corruption
back of the silence wl^ich the leaders
fear. to face.
"Where are the great men of the
Republican party ? Where are tho
Hannas, Quays, Platts,' Spooners, Al
driches, Chandlers, Hales, Allisons,
Dollivers, Reeds, Cannons, Paynes,
Dalzclls, Grosvenors, Moodys, Manns,
Tawneys, and scores of other cham
pions of Republicanism v/ho regarded
an assault upon the honor of their
party as a personal insult, and who
never failed to carry the war into
the enemy's camp. Is the Republican
party dead ? Is it so lacking in
leaders that it is about to disinte
grate and disappear? >
"The rank and file of the Republi
can party are true and loyal Ameri
cans. They will follow great leaders.
But they will not follow men who
do not have the courage to defend the
party against unjust assault. Tho
time has come when leadership in the
Republican party must be asserted
at once by the men who have been
elected as leaders, or these men will
be repudiated and the party itself
will run the risk of destruction.
"A presidential campaign is ap
proaching. Through the lack of stal
wart and vigilant leadership the Re
publican party goes into the campaign
as if it were n criminal on the way
to execution. Senators who should
have defended the Republican party
against insinuations are now silent
and apologetic, afraid to confess that
they are Republicans. Not one of
them has done his duty by /lis party,
a"nd all of them know they are
recreant to their party trust,
"It is not tho Republican party that
is on trial. It is the leaders who are
on trial, but if this venality is estab
lished the party crashes to ruin. Let
them make good while there is time."
Federal and state .officers captured
and destroyed orte of the largest
booze mills in the history of Richland
county Friday morning. It was lo
cated ten miles from Columbia on the
Newberry road. It is said the plant
was capable of producing liquor at
the rate of a gallon a minute.
Voicing Ilia Feelings.
A policeman was walking along the
slreet, when he heard screams.
"What's up in here?" he asked a
little lad who answered his knock at
the door.
"Nothing, much," answered the
boy. . "It's only my brother Dicky,
and he's crying 'cause ma is cross
eyed and deaf."
"Well, well," said the officer,
"what a tender feeling he most have."
"You're right, guv'nor. Ma's mend
ing his trousers sod be'a got 'em on."
