At a meeting of the Directors of
the Chamber of (Commerce last
Thursday a Tourist Bureau was or
ganized, uh a distinct working pa ft
of the Chamber of Commerce. This

tact between the people of Camden

and will oonsider and make recom
mendations as to ways and means of
properly' advertising our advantages

to publish the names of all delinquent
taxpayer*, under the terms of an act
recently passed by the general as
sembly and approved by the governor.
The* law requires every sheriff to file
u report and turn over all money col
lected every 30 days to treasurers and
not later than six months after the
tax , executions have been placed in

Another important portion of the
act require# county treasurers at the
last term of the circuit court in each
year for their respective counties to
deliver to the foreman of the grand
jury a complete list of all tax execu
tions delivered to the. sheriff for col
lection which have not been col
lectccf. The grand jury is given power
to present delinquent" "sKerlfTs to the
presiding judge. The act reads ns
follows:
Section 527. The sheriffs in the sev
eral counties in the state, in making
levies and sales, in making returns,
and in paying over money collected
under tax warrants and executions
placed in their hands by county treas
urers, shall be subject to the direction
and under the control of the comp
troller general of the state, as they
are now, in like manner to plaintiff*
in executions; and the comptroller
general is hereby invested with all the
rights and privileges of a plaintiff in
execution, to invoke and obtain the
aid of the court to compel refractory
sheriffs to discharge their duties in
the enforcement of tax executions;
and it is hereby made the duty of the
mid sheriffs, respectively, to make
return of. nil elocutions to ? the
treasurer of their respective counties
within .six months after the date of
issue thereof, designating such as
may be nulla .bona and such as may
otherwise, and within the same time
have been collected by distress or
to pay over to the siiid treasurer all
taxes ajul penalties collected by
them; and the several county treasur
er shall, at the last term of t,he cir
cuit court in each yenr for their re
spective counties, 'deliver to the fore
man ? >f the grand jury a complete list
of all tax executions delivered to the
*h?rilT for collection which, have
not been collected, and the grand jury
shall examine the said list and pre
sent the sheriff for any default or
neglect in the performance of his du
ties relative to the enforcement of
such executions. And in case any
sheriff shall make default in paying
over within the time aforesaid any
money collected on said executions it
fchall be the duty of the county treas
urer, and he is hereby required, im
mediately to bring suit against such
defaulting sheriff in any court of
competent jurisdiction, in which suit
sueh sheriff shall be liable to treble
the amount for which he has default
ed; and in case of any loss resulting
?by reason of the failure of the county
treasurer to perform the duties herein
set forth, such treasurer shall be lia
ble therefor: Provided, That said
sheriff shall make a report and turn
over all moneys collected every .'i0
days to the said treasurer and not
later than six months after Lne tax

hands. The said treasurer shall, with
in ten days thereafter, publish in m
newspaper within the county the
names and amounts of all delinquents
and taxes; the cost of such publica
tion to be taxed against said delin
quent as costs in such proportion as

That Cotton Mill Again.
Editor Chronicle:? ; We have never
yet 'gone into auch deep waters that
we could not wade or twin out, nor
are we afraid of being engulfed by
the overwhelming billows if we take
a few steps further into the contro
versy that was unintentionally on our
part started last week by the little
article we wrote in regard to that
"Million Dollar Mill." We believe
that what we said was for Camden's
good, we believe so still, we told only
the truth and it has not been dis
proved. But for several reasons we
do ifot care to continue the contro
versy as it engenders only bitterness
and bad feeling, array's side against
side and never reacts for the good, of
the town we all love and in which We
are all interested. . *Y
Another reason is we do not care
to "lose out" in the good graces of
our friend, the editor of the Messen
ger, with whom we have enjoyed an
uninterrupted friendship for a num
ber of years, and we trust that this
friendship may not go up in the
smoke of industries and be lost for
ever. However, may the smoke of
industries ascend in volumes carry
ing with it all differences of opinion
that shall merge into a vapour and
descend in refreshing showers upon
Camden and its people. May peace
be within our walls, and prosperity
within our homes. Citizen.
