Camden, S. C? January 25, 1924. Thomas I>. Murphy, one of the South'* beat known newspaper men., and managing editor of the Augu^a Chronicle, died in Augusta Saturday night. Mr. Murphy htlft been in fail ing health for the past 12 months but had been confined to his home for only a week or more. His death- *?t 7 o'clock tonight followed a sudden at tack of the heart disease to which his illness was due. The end came peacefully with his family at the bed side. He was .03- years of ago. Mr. Murphy's journalistic career was a most remarkable one. Nearly a half century ago he began work on The Augusta Chronicle as a printer's ap prentice, worked, his way to the "case" as a master, tradesman and later entered the editorial positions. It is estimated that as many as twenty thousand people attended the unveiling of the heroic statue of (len, Robert E. Ix?e on Stone Mountain last Saturday. Governors of five South ern states were present as follows: Governor Morrison of North Carolina; Governor Mcl/ood of South Carolina; Governor Nell" of Texas; Governor Walker, of Geo^fcia ; and Governor Trinkle of Virginia. Major General David C. Shanks" represented the army and Rear Admiral Geo. VV. Williams, represented the navy. Mrs. Plane, widow of Col. Plane, of the Confeder ate ariny, bad the honor of putting ? the- cord thai threw the enveloping veil off the statue. Dr. Plato Durham of Emory University vvn* the orato*1 of the occasion. Judge- Henry Jrthnson has granted a change of venue in the case of Wil son G. Harvey, charged with violation of the banking laws from Charleston J county to Allendale. Solicitor Allen J has appealed tho <*ase to the supreme court on the ground that since- the statute provides that a venue be ] 'changed to ano'her county in the same district, and s'nee Charleston is, the only county in its judicial district there is no warrant of law for a change to Allendale. It is expected, that the case will come up in Allen dale on July I . ? Miss Helen Elizabeth To|bert has been nominated as postmaster at (J roc n wood, S. C. Miss Tolbert is a first cousin of .Joe W. Totbert, Repub lican national committeeman for South Carolina. William It, If.iithcock, 30 year old farmer, of Richland county, was found f^uilty early Wednesday morning 'n Richland court of the murder of Ar thur Pedfrts. iloth were white men. The tragedy occurred on the Leesburg road when J'edins was shot to death while in a car with Mrs. Haithcock. The two men were neighbors. Tho verdict carries ? the death penalty. Judge Mendel Smith had not set the date for his electrocution. We believe that thin Recorder knows what consti tuteH Huch an offense, and that without four or favor, or the consideration of friend or foe, or any other influence he sought the truth, after having, a? he thought, found it, he became the human mouthpiece of justice. He was not expected to ' act either for or against Mr. Shore or the Chief of Po lice; either for or against the Camden or Sumter citizens. He was placed in authority to vindicate the law; not to show friendship or enmity towards anyone. It was not for him to uphold an officer, whatever the apparent rea son, unless the acta of such an officer Were within the scope of his legal authority. It was not for him to ex onerate or punish the individual be cause of the apparent effect that such exoneration or punishment might have. His findings, unless reversed by higher authority are clothed with the majesty cf law, and should challenge the respect Of all law abiding men. Occupying an he did highly trust worthy positions, with a full knowl edge of the responsibilities) devolving upon him, and clothed with the requi site legal learning he was eminently qualified to act as Judge, and we will rely upon his judgment unless it is re versed. Mr. Shoro has demonstrated that he is the owner of a priceless possession ? a good name. The array of friends who testified as to his character should cause him .pardonable pride, and unmistakably give him the pleas ing assurance of the respect and friendship of his fellow men. Tho Chief of Police of Camden is thrice blessed". He is under the tongue of good repute; he is a trusted officer of tho law; and enjoys the friendship and esteem of such true, high-tonfcd and loyal men as Mr, Henry Carrison, the Mayor o? Camden. Sumter and Camden are united by holy tics of love and friendship which have existed for genera tionsTSu niter's troubles have been our troubles, and we have shared in the pride of her in domitable spirit, and her splendid achievements, and enjoyed her gener ous hospitality. She has been to us as a sister when disaster has over taken some of our citizens. Her sons and ours have bivouaced together on tho tented field, and, for the same principles some of them have passed into the groat boyond. Her past, her traditions and aspirations are ours. Therefore, it is deeply rcgrotted by some of us that an unpleasant incident bus arisen between the trusted officer of tho law in Camden and a represent ative and highly respected citizen of Sumter.
