Section I. That "An Ordinance to
Regulate the Running of Automo
biles of* Motor Vehicles, Public
Hacks and Traiisfera, upon the Public
Highways of the City of Camden, and
Prohibiting the Stopping of Vehicles
except for Certain Purposes, within
a Certain Area, at the corner of Do
Kalb and Broad Streets, and Fixing
a Penalty for the Violation Thereof,"
Ratified in City Council of the city of
.Camden the 7th day. of September,
1915, be amended so that when .*o
amended said Ordinance shall read as
follows:
Section II. That it .shall be unlaw
ful for any person or persona without'
securing registration lot licohRQ as
provided for in the Statute* Law of the
State ojt South Carolina, to run, drive,
or operate any motor vehicle -on or
Hhfcig tho public .streets of the City
of Camden without having displayed
at all time? to public view in the
rear of said vehicles, a license number
as required by the State Highway
Department under the law providing
for such license number, PROVIDED,
that this shall not apply to non-resi
dent owners of motor vehicles, duly
registered and licensed in their home
state, unless said motor vehicle shall
remain within the Citv limit's- for
thirty days. PROVIDED FURTHER,
that this shall not apply to purchasers
of new motor vehicles until after ten
days from the purchase of tfanie.
Section 111. That no driver of auto
mobiles or motor vehicles shall oper
of the City of Camden in a
dangerous manner or a t a
dangerous speed. Inattention in
driving automobiles or motor vehicles
is considered dangerous to the public
?ud is prohibited. That under no cir
cumstances shall an automobile or
. motor vehicle run on the streets of
the City of Camden at a rate of speed,
more than twenty -five miles an
hour.
Section IV. That every automobile
or motor , vehicle; hack or transfer
travelling or passing on or over any
* of the. public .streets of t|ie ('it y of
Camden shall keep entirely on the
right of the center of said streets,
except in case of emergency, so as not
to obstruct the passage of. any per
sons, carriage, animal or thing on the
other side of the center thereof.
Section V. On approaching corners
horns of automobiles or motor vehi*
cles shall l>e sounded emphatically
several times anrl before making a
turn at any corner or elsewhere the
driver of the motor vehicle shall" by
the wave of the hand indicate the fact
?that he is .going to make the turn..
Section VI. Upon approaching a
crossing of intersecting streets of the
City of Camden a person operating an
automobile or motor vehicle shall have
it under control, and operate it at a
rate of speed no greater than ten
miles an hour, and not turning any
corner at any greater rate of speed
than six miles an hour, and in no
event greater than is reasonable and
proper, having regard to the traffic
then on such street and to the safety
of the public.
Section VII. When a person oper
ating an automobile or motor vehicle
shall meet on the public streets of the
City of Camden any other person rid
ing or driving a horse or horses, or
other draft animal or other motor
vehicle, the person operating such
motor vehicle shall reasonably turn
same to the right of the center of
such street so as to pass without in
terference. Any person operating a
motor vehicle shall on overtaking any
such horse, draft animal or other
motor vehteie pass on the left side
thereof, and the rider or driver of
such horse, draft animal or other ve
hicle, shall, as soon as practical, turn
to the right, so as to allow free pass
age on the left. Any person operat
ing a motor vehicle shall, at the inter
section of streets of the City of Cam
den keep to the right of the intersec
tion of t he centers ot such streets
when turning to the li^ht, pass to the
left of such intersection when turning
to the left. Any person operating a
motor vehicle on the streets of City of
Camden on Hroad Street from Arthur
Street to DeKalh Street, and on I ?e
Kalh Street from Campbell Strivt to
l.yttleton Street, shall not turn within
the block on such streets, hut shall
turn at the silent sentinels at the in
tersection and in turning the silent
sentinels should always be to the left
of the motor vehicle in making the
turn. That in turning at the inter
section of Hroad and Laurens Street
the turn shall he so made that the
monument at said intersection shall
always lie to the left of the motor
vehicles making the turn.
Section VIII. A person operating a
motor vehicle shall, at request, or
upon signal by putting up the hand,
from a person riding or driving a
restive horse or horses. or other draft
animals, bring such motor vehicle
immediately to a stop, if necessary,
having due regard for safety of per
sons, vehicles and animals, and if
travelling in opposite direction, re
main stationary so long as may he
reasonable to allow such horses or
animals to pass. And if traveling m
the same direction, the person or per
sons operating the motor vehicle shall

Section JX. That it shall be unlaw
ful for any person or persons while
under the influence of intoxicating
liquorH or narcotics to drive or operate
upon the streets of Camden any auto
mobile or motor vehicle,' hack or
transfer,
Section X. That it shall be unlaw
ful for any minor under the age of
fourteen years (14) to drive or oper
ate any automobile or motor vehicle
upon the streets of the City of (Cam
den, whuthor or not the same bewith
the consent of their parents or
guardian.
Section XI. That every person
driving a motor vehicle that strikes
or hits any person or other vehicle
shall stop Such <110 tor vehicle at once
and render such assistance as he or
she can, and shall, upon request, give
his or her name and postofflce ad
dress, and the license of his or her
motor vehicle,
Section XII. That after dusk each
automobile or motor vehicle in oper
ation in the City of Camden shall have
lit two lights on the front and one in
the rear of said vehicle, front light to
he of such power as to throw the light
at least two hundred feet and cn^blo
anyone in said vehicle to see clearly
for that distance. That when driving
an automobile or motor vehicle after
dark on such portions of Broad and
DeKalb Streets as contains the
"White Way" and when said "White
Way" is lighted, the poison operating
said automobile or motor vehicle shall
keep dim the front lights on' said mor
tor vehicle. That in driving any auto
mobile or motor vehicle on any streets
bile or motor vehicle on any streets
or portion of street not containing the
"White Way" on approaching another
automobile or motor vehicle the per
son operating the said aulomobihe or
-motor vehicle shall dim the front
light on said automobile until the ap
preaching motor vehicle is passed.
Section XIII. That it shall be un
lawful for any person in the City of
Camden without the consent of the
owner or person having in charge an
automobile or motor vehicle to get in,
stand on any part, or interfere in any
way with the same.
Section XIV.,' That all public hacks
and transfers after dusk while being
driven on the public streets of the
City of Camden shall carry ligbtfc said
lights to be approved by the Street
Commissioner of the City of Camden.
Section XV. That no person .shall
operate on the' paved streets of the
?City of Camden an automobile with
leaking gasoline, ^hat in case an auto
mobile is leaking gasoline there shall
be attached to said automobile or put
under same a pan to catch the leaking
gasoline.
Section XVI. That any person vio
lating the provisions of this ordinance
shall upon conviction, be lined a sum
not more than One Hundred Dollars,
or he imprisoned for not more than
thirty days, an/1 that such imprison
ment may, at the discretion of the
Recorder of the City of Camden, be
accompanied with the additional re
quirement of hard labor on the streets
of said city.
Section XVII. All Ordinances or
parta of Ordinances conflicting with
this Ordinance be and the same are
hereby revoked. This Ordinance shall
take effect on the 1st day of January
102-1.

military service of this State and per
sons who served in the War Between
the States; and all quarantine service
of this State and all residents who
may be attending school or college at
the time when said road tax shall be
come due. Persons claiming disabil
ities must present' certificate from
two reputable physicians of this
county.

taxes will be furnished upon applica

DOG TAX.
I wish to call special attention to
the dog license tax, which can be paid
from October 15th. 1923, to February
1st, 1924. (February 1st, 1924, is the
last day for the payment of this tax.)
The license tax on each dog is $1.25,
and I now have the license tags to
supply owners of dogs when paying
their license tax. A dog is liable to
this tax if six months old or older on
January 1st. (A dog born June 30th,
1!)23, is liable to the tax January 1st,
1924.)
This is in lieu of all other taxes
or licenses on dogs, either county, mu
nicipal or otherwise
Dog license tax issued by the
Treasurer should bear *.he inscription
"Dog License 1924," also show the
serial number und county. This is not
charged on the Auditor's Duplicate,
nor carried on the odinary tax re
ceipt. Separate receipt necessary.
