ORIGIN OF 'THIRTY." Famous Signature at End of Copy Gathers Many Legend**. An inquiry received this week asks u? to dig up the exact information a# to the way the term "MO"" came to by used in placo of "good night" at the end of all newspaper copy. Our first informant was an old te legrapher, a man who dates back be fore the days -of the Associated Press. "Why, thats simple," said he. ("I was working at the time it wax inven ted, right in the office. J "We used to send copy to newspa pers in those days with 100 words on a page, and newspapers were entitled to .1,000 words. When we hit the bot tom of the last page we jotted down 4o0\ the number* of pages, and called it a day." . Wonder what the Southern admir ers of Tfke Literary Digest think of its treatment, of the negro exodus from the South and its causes? The Digest is supposed to be a publica tion which gives weekly summary of the best thought of the people! In many respects it is? a valuable paper, but in copying a full page cartoon from The Liberator and its selection of causes advanced for the migration of the negro, it has inflicted a dent in its own reputation. . The cartoon represents an army of negro men, women and children fleeing from the South. The Literary Digest was cir culating a picture which must inevi tably establish a false impression in the minds of thousands of people who, not knowing the South, will ever think of it as a land of savages who burn negro home's, hang the negroes to trees and drive them 'out of the. land. There are many vicious negro papers if) the North and West, and there is an incendiary organization known as the National Association for Advancement of the Welfare of Ne groes. but the combined evil influ ences of all these would never work the injury to the reputation of the ^outh that the Literary Digest pub lication has wrought. ?
