GREEK FOUND DEAD.
Stranger Apparently Mardered and |
V Placed in Wood? Near Highway.
Columbia, June IB. ? The badly de
composed bodjt <>f Ji?? Hatzj Moraki?,
a Greek of Madison, Ga", was found
about 7 oVIoi k yesterday morning on
the place of H. J. Basalefr, three and
a half mile* from Columbia on the
Two Notch road* jvith the skull fright
fully fractured and' a bullet hole in
the temple. A new model six ujch
barrel 32-calibre revolver with one
cartridge fired was stuck, murzie
down, in the ground, near thv- victim's
feet. lx>cal authorities are convinced
the man was murdered.
Word from Madison last night was
. that the chief of police of that place
was holding two Greeks for investi
gation.
As far as could be ascertained in
Columbia yesterday., the ?|ead man
was a stranger in this vicinity.
The crime may have been committ
ed at that place, where the body was
|ound, but on the otherhand, the mur
der may have taken place many mile*
away and the body carried to t h*5 spot
where it was discovered.. The body
was found by a small son of Mr. Bas
. sler about 20 yards from the National
Highway to C'amdeh. Sheriff H?iso
and Coroner Scott were notified and
the latter. Chief Dunaway and T. K.
Davis, deputy sheriff, went in the
scene.
The body lay half face down and
half on the right side with the left
shoulder against a small black jack
oak, the size of a man's forearm, a
silk handkerchief, which had been
placed, evidently .over the victim's
head, was lying near the body, satu
rated with blood. The pistol was two
or three feet from the dead man's feet
with the muzzle thrust three inches
into the sand and with the butt point
ed jfway from the body.
A bricklayers' union of New York
has flatly refused a compromise offer
of $11 a day on a contract for a pe
riod of two years and a half.

Kidgewood Club Defeat* Cefnden.
n The Kidgewood Golf Club of Colum
bia defeated the ?amden Country
Club Golf Teem last Friday afternoon
by a score of twenty to eight. The
vUitOrtf had a well balanced team, end
fought hard for their victory. Cam
den suffered from the lo** of fivr o|
their players, who' were counted upon
a?t point winner*, being called vut of

match. They were John Villepigue,
the local champion, ^ B. Wallace,

Charlie Villepigue, substituting for
his brother, easily defeated Dr, Hud
gins, the Columbia ehamjfton. "(Sil
ly" Newman of Columbia, with a
score of 6K, made the course record.

forced to use five green substitutes
and among them was Wooten, a high
school lad of only six weeks golf ex
perience, and surprised both teams
by winningl two points from Jolly,
an experienced ?player,
Tho visitors were served refresh
ments at the club house following the
match, and they invited the local
players to play a return rpatch in
Columbia on Friday afternoon, the
2Uth, inst., Camden wants to get
match games with Chhrleaton, Green
ville, and Rock Hill during the sum
mer months. The locals- hav^l^al
ready defeated Sumter and Orange
burg.

At the last session the legisla
ture an act was passed appropriating
a pension fund of $25.00 each for
faithful negro servants who rendered
service in the Confederate war. I

As to why this amount is $7,00 in

formed. It may be that the number

they can get their seven dollars.

the 1st of April, 1924, together with
interest from the date of the adoption
of the Assessment Roll, at the rale of

On Monday next we will begin the circulation of a petition for the completion of our various paving pro
jects, and with this petition will be one for the extension of our sewerage system into Ward One and likely
the eastern section of Ward Three. To complete all the paving projects we will need approximately $85,- 7
000.00. To extend the much needed sewerage system we will need $10,000.00, a total additional bond issue
which we ask of $95,000.00. - * N
To finance our total indebtedness we will increase the present mill levy from twenty to # twenty-five mills,
which is from three to four mills less than our sister towns around us. Th'e paving assessments as previously
stated will run fifteen annual installments, (optional with property owner.) ^

With the completion of our intended improvements, we will have paved Six and One-third miles of streets
at an average cost of $2.17 per square yard as against the present contract prices around the State of $2.85. Our
sidewalks are costing us $1.35 per square yard, as against the present prices being let of $1.80. It will there
fore" be seen that we are getting the worth of our money. We realize that our town has gone extensively into
modern improvements, but we believe that our citizens feel that it has been worth the effort and money ex
pended, that we have but kept pace with the times and that beneficial results are bound to be derived there
from, With the above facts before you, we ask your continued support in order that we may complete the
program now before us.
