Direct Cable Mone> Transfer Service.
Manager IMckson of the Western
I'nion Telegraph Company announces
an arrangement effective as of .June 1,
whereby cabled money transfers to
France will be .paid in American
funds at the option of thr render. In
other words, if. say, $1U<? is cabled
via Western Union to Paris, the
amount wil be pajd at destination
either in U. S. currency or in francs,
according to the choice of the re
mitter.
The particular, value of this ar
rangement is that it eliminates ques
tions of exchange and places the
payee in a position Jo take full ad
vantage of the premium on American
currency. It also involves refund of
the full amo'unt deposited in the crtse
of non-payment, which is another
great advantage in the case of a de
clining foreign curreicy.
The Western Union Company be
'lieves that the establishment of a di
rect money transfer service to France
on the dollar basis will be a consider
able convenience to people desiring
to send money cheaply, quickly, safe
ly and directly to their friends or
relatives in that country.
South Carolina's commercial crop
of early Irish potatoes, which lasts
year ran 4,500 carloads, averaging
200 barrels the car, has not yet at
tained the peak of movement, the sea
son being late by perhaps a week. Th?
crop will bring more than $4,000,000.

Mill Dam Broke.
Owing to the excessive ruins of
Tuesday night the (lam at Adam's
Mill, the property of Mr. G. T. Little,
broke in one email place and turned
loose quite u bit of water into the
Hermitage Mill pond gome miles fur
thet down. We learn, however that
the Hermitage Mill dam is still quite
safe, tlthough a large lot of water
came into it. The break at the Adam's
pond is not a serious one and it did
not drain the pond.
Quite a lot of crops on farms in the
vicinity of Adam's pond were ?adly
damaged from the heavy rains, and in
some places thr 1 1 op* were complete
ly destroyed.

Associated Tours Guide For Motorists
Motorists who* are planning vaca
tion tours during tho summer months
will be pleased to know that, the 1923
Associated Tours Guide, the official
road book compiled and published by
The Automobile Club of America, is
now ready for distribution.
By following the carefully selected
foad maps with which the Guide's
101 pages are filled summer vacation
ists are * enabled to tour by motor
through the most . charming sections
of the United States and Canada to
seaside, mountain and country re
sorts. AH tours in the Guide aro
compiled with a view tp scenic charm;
the roads " mapped are the best
stretches of hard highway that the
cduntry affords.
For transcontinental rhotor tourists
there is a dotyble page Atlantic to
Pacify, road map showing thp several
routes across tho United States, ac
companied by complete itineraries for
increasingly popular trip. For those
visiting the New England country
there is is a map of the recently
adopted road marking system. A large
folding road map of the entire Coun
try east of Chicago accompanies the
Guide.
A feature ofthe Associated Tours
Guide that motorists particularly ap
preciate is that the 'itineraries are
arranged to allow for logical stopping
places lit the end of each day's run at
townsiwhere accommodations may be
readily secured. Synopses of State
Motor laws, ferry scheaules, and lists
of good hotels and garages also go to
increase the Guide's usefulness to the
automobilist.
For the accommodation of car own
ers the Guide will be distributed
through local news dealers, boyk
stores and drug stores in all parts of
the country or may be obtained by
remitting fifty cents to cover cost
and postage to The Automobile Club
of America, 247 West 54th Street,
New York City.
Diamonds From Arkansas.
Nearly (5,000 diamonds have been
found in diamond mines in Arkansas,
and some stones have been picked up
in other states. The diamond fields
of Arkansas are in Scott county,
where a valuable diamond was first
found in 1006 by John Huddleston, a
farmer. The mule he was lading hap
pened to kick up a stone of unusual
brilliance, which caught his eye. He
dismounted, picked up the stone and
put it in his pocket* and a few days
later the performance was repeated.
The stones wore sent to Tiffany of
New York, whose expert said "dia
monds," and soon afterward Mr. Hud
dlestone is ?tfiid to have sold his 40
acre farm for $86,000. Thpugh the
diamond field of Arkansas has never
achieved greatness, it has yie^ed a
considerable number of fine stones,
the' largest weighing 21 1-4 carats.
Another stone weighed 17.86 carats.
Many of the Arkansas stones are as
fine as any found elsewhere and, ac
cording to George F. Kunz, of "Tif
fany's, they include a large proportion
of white stones, most of them of a
high grade in color and brilliancy and
freedom from flaws. Doctor Kunz
further states i-n describing several
of the yellow, brown and white jtones
from Arkansas, that "these are abso
lutely perfect and .1re equal" to the
finest stones found at the Jagersfon
tein mine <>r that were ever found in
India."
A few of- the Arkansas diamonds, it
is said, 'have sold for as high as $600
a carat. Most of them, however, are
uncut and have been placed in private
and museum collection. Diamonds do
not occur in clusters, nor are they(
gathered together in the volcanic
"pipo" or mother lodes in which they
are found.

STAIRWAY DID N0T FALL
(Continued from page one.)
tralized, consolidated schools.
"The Cleveland school district with
one three teacher school and one one
teacher school, had been consolidated
with the Boykin school district, which
had two schools of one teacher each.
There was to be this coming fall f?r
the entire area one school, the dis
trict having purchased the historic
ante bellum Boykin mansion, estimat
ed to be worth $25,000 but sold to tM ?
district for $7,000 through the gen- .
erosity of its owner, a lady from t"6
North who had lived there many
years. This Tmilding is practically
the center of the two combined dis
tricts. Although built for a resident?
in 1818, this ten-room habitation for
the new consolidated school is t0
have spacious stairways. .
"This was a community of unusual . \
prosperity and of very fine traditions
of wealth and culture. The .people ?
the country were related to the poop'*
in the town of CaflKkn, and many
