Columbia, S. May 18. ? A proc

aid of the sufferers from the Cleve
land school fire was issued this after

The governor issued his proclama
tion aftor he had talked by telephone
to people in Camden and had been
told that despite the fact that all of
fers of aid hud been declined during
the day, money would be needed.
His proclamation follows:
"Whereas, the terrible disaster
caused, by the burning of the Cleve
land school house in Kershaw county
last night is one of the i'rentest trag
edies our State Juts ever known, and
"Whcras, the cry of sorrow and
distress of the relatives and friends
of the men, women and. children who
lost their lives has reached the fur
thermost corners of the state, and
"Wheras, in many cases these peo
ple are suffering n<>t only from the
unparalleled anguish of such bereave
ment but they have been deprived of
financial support by the loss of tho
head of their families, and are in need
of assistance to give them the neces
sities of life;
"Now, therefore, I, Thomas G> M c?
Lead, as governor of the State ,do
call upon the people of South Caroli
na to do everything within their ^>ow
er to abate as much aH possible the
anguish- of our fellow citizens. In
the name of humanity, let those of
us who are able send generous con
tributions of funds to supply physi
cal assistance to those who need it.
Let us also unite in praying to the
Divine Healer to sooth their broken
spirits with Mis lo^e and in assuring
them of the boundless sympathy iind
brotherly love of the people through
out the State who sorrow with them."
The governor designated The Co
lumbia State as the collector of funds.

Young Women Thought To Have

(By Stat? Correspondent of The Co
lumbia State.)
Camden, May 21.? -Ah morbid sight
t !, from l'ar and m ar nuitimu' to
come on heartless journeys to the
site of tin* Cleveland school and tin*
great grave where rest the remain-, of
the majority of the victims of Thurs
day's grim <lisaster, interest in Kpr
shaw coyinty centers how about ^he
living and all efforts are being diVec
ted to the aid of the orphans,, widows,
widowers and other bereaved ones
who escaped the fire only to suffer ir
reparable loss of relatives *and
friends.
The list of known dead stands at
77, investigation today having re
vealed the fact that Miss Ida Black
moii, teacher in the Thorrte Hi I!
schoo|, and Miss Blanche Thorne, also
of Thorne Hill, reported yesterday as
probably lost, were not at the school
house on the night of the fire. Miss
Blackmon, Miss Thorne, and Miss Isa
belle Ballard, all of Thorne Hill, ac
cording to information received today
had planned to attend the Cleveland
school closing, Thursday. 'However
they changed their plans and so only
by this narrow margin escaped poa
sible death in the blaze. Camden
friends of the three young women,
knowing of their plan to attend the
commencement exercises and unable
^to learn anything of them since the
fire, presumed that they had been lost
in the school house blaze and so the
report started that they had been
killed.
N SPENDS BUSY DAY.
T. Carter Taylor, director of dis
aster relief for the Southern division
of the lied Gross, -who has taken,
charge of the relief work, Mrs. Marg
aret Miller and other relief officials
spent a busy day today in completing
their preliminary survey of conditions
in the stricken districts. The survey
reveals the fact, Mr. Taylor said, that
ail previous estimates of money need
ed were woefully inadequate. Num-.
bers of orphans and others needing
immediate assistance have been found
and to take care of these emergency
cases a sight draft for $2,000 has
been drawn upon the American Red
Cross to give the relief committee
! funds with which to proceed at once
j with their la
At the meeting of the relief com
mittee today a total of $4,004.65 was
reported as having been collected for
the relief fund in Camden, the great
er proportion of this amount -having
been given by Kershaw county folk.
This amount does not include the con
| tributions from points out of Kershaw
j county, collected through The State,
hut does, however, comprise various
I amounts sent in direct to the commit
tee.
CASKS OF MENTAL SHOCK.
Investigations today, brought to
light no other persons known to have
! suffered serious physical injuries in
the fire. A number of cases of mental
shock were found, however, *and it :s
these hurts, Mr. Taylor believes, that
will probably be the most, serious.
Among these is Otis Arrants, a young
lad who was a member of the cast of
"Topsy Turvy," the commencement
play. Young Arrants lost his sister
in the fire and is still suffering from
shock as a result of terrible sights
he beheld and the experiences he went
through. The horrible scenes appear
to be continuously coming before his
mind. Again and again ho sees the
burning building and hears the cries
of the dying. The boy was among the
last persons to escape alive from
the building and was perhaps the last
to make his way via the jammed
stairway. He had to cover his head
with his coat and with this shield
was able to crawl to safott over the
living dam that practically cut off all
passage down the stairs. In his ter
rible trip down the human indder he
dropped his watch in some way. The
watch was dug out of the lire the
next morning still running.
Charles Davis, 11 months old in
fant. orphaned by the fire. Mr. Taylor
said, had been tarried to the Camden
hospital, where he will be tared for
until some permanent arrangement
t an be made. Walter Davis, who was
under medical treatment in Columbia
at the time of the fire, has returned
t.> the capital, carrying v. ith him his
two surviving daughter-, eight and
ten years old, respectively. Mr. Davis
lost his wife and two children in the
holocaust. The children f> r the time
bring. aT least, will make '.h< ;r homes

Davis* brother.

Protect Your Luggage
and Personal Property
Loss of personal effects while traveling is a common
occurrence, and it is for this reason that this Travel
Policy is written. It protects the Policyholder OR ANY
MEMBER OF HIS HOUSEHOLD from loss of personal
effects: ? Trunks, Bags, Suitcases, Clothing, etc., while
traveling, but excluding Jewelry, Watches, and similar
valuables. You may think you are fully protected
against losses while traveling. No doubt you have fire
and burglary insurance on your household goods ? you
don't worry about them while you're away from home.
But how about baggage and personal property you
carry with you? Any protection against loss, damage,
