Freak Weather is
Summer Outlook;
Sun Loafs on Job
Washington, Q. C., May
A Hummer of "fpeak weather1' is
in prospect because of solar con
ditions, government weather ex
perts and scientists predicted to
night after intensive study of
conditions on the nun.
Repeating in statements made
to the United Press on AprU 28th
that tin- tiun is "taking u vara
lion" just as it has every 11
years for a Ion# time, scientists
at the Smithsonian Institution
and the weather bureau Raid that
"topsy turvy weather condi -
tiQBI would prevail all this
year.
The sun probably will be back
to normal try next year, they
na id.
Scientists do not foresee u
/'sutflmerless year" such as pre
vailed in 181(1, when ueople wore
overcivats in July and snow and
frost were common in the dog
days. Thoy do not know what
to predict, except that the weath
er will not be that of a normal
summer. They do not know
whether the suh is wholly to
blan^e. Reing able to assign no
other cause, however, thoy rest
their case on the known fact that .
the sun is not behaving normally
this year.
The cold spring in the United
States, unusually hot weather in
Europe, UNUSUAL HURRI
CANKS in the Pacific, aTORNA
IM> AM) CLOUD HURST in ,
Washington, I). C., -?these are
all evidences, the scientists say,
of. tin* unsettled conditions
which make weather forecasting
well nigh hopelesH.
As nearly ns the scientific njen
tan explain it, what happens to
cause such conditions is this:
Every 1 1 years, during the L'OO i
years covered by reliable data, ? '
the sun has ceased developing
"sun spots." These spots, which
break out on the surface of sun
like volcanic craters on the earth i
indicate that the sun is working j
full time, and their appearance
always is accompanied by plenty
of heat and normal meteorologi
cal conditions on the earth.
When the sun spots do not ap
pear, the sun ."cools off" and
rests. This year for instance, it
is furnishing the earth from
three to four per cent, less heat
than usual. Under such condi
tions, the scientists say, the |
weather on earth "just goes to
pieces. Conditions are extreme
either very hot or very cold;
I VKRY RAINY or verv drv; very
} calm or VKRY STORMY.
I STORMS DURINU SUCH
I TIMKS ARK LIKKLY TO RK
OK UNUSUAL VTOLKNUF.
Droughts and heat waves of kill
ing intensity occur.
The weather also is "spotty," !
according to the scientists. One
?side of the earth may be burning
up. while in another quarter un
i seasonable snow, sleet and HAIL
) STORMS and killing frosts occur.
No way has been discovered to (
chxirt its vagaries so that scien
I Jitic men run foretell conditions.
They can only wait until the sun
ends its loafing period. They do
not even know how long that will
be. THeir predictions that it will
be. over by next, year are based on
previous observation .
