A smiling little negro with h basket of eggs on her arm had little trouble passing through the Union lines about Balti more and Washington, seventy-two times during the Civil, war and offi cers of the Federal army often won dered how certain information was passed back and forth to and from the Confederate captain at Richmond. The small negivss, now 78 years of age, is here from St. Louis to attend the Confederate reunion. "She" is Major J. M. Crowley, formerly a Loui sianan, who was one of the personal couriers of Jefferson Davis, presi dent of the Confederacy. Major Crow ley's first assignment wan given him at Montgomery, .Ala., when that citv was the Confederate capital. President Davis iind his cabinet desired a courier to take ^ message from Montgomery to Washington which "since has been discloses as a communication to the British minister. Major Crowley, then only years of age, was given the [job., When he finally returned to Mont gomery, Major Crowley learned the capital had been removed to , Rich mond. He followed his chieftain and made 23 round trips through the lines into Washington and 13 into Balti more. "It was easy to do when you know how," ho said, with a twinkle in his eye, "I'd go into the woods and get walnut juice which f would smear over my face. Several women, touched by his boyishness, intcrctjded and the sen tence was commuted and he was sent to a prison camp at Columbus, Ohio. New Nurse For County. Another new nurse htv> been added to the force of the bureau of child hygiene and public health nursing of the state board of health. This new nurse is Miss Louise. Margaret Moul ton of Westboro, Mass. She has been assigned to Kershaw county and is now in Columbia observing special mid-wifery and home nursing classes. She will do special work along this line when she takes' up her duties in Kershaw county April 16th. Miss Moulton is a graduate of the Peter Bent Brighan^ school of nursing in Boston and is considered well qual ified to take charge of the work in Kershaw county. Kershaw county has had a nursing service for some time but has been without a nurse since early last fall. ? Cohinibia State, April 14th.
