1 1 w i J I ? i ?'<:?! i? (I that fifteen
or twenty years a go shad were plen
tiful in most of the streams of the
tri t < . i, 'it that in recent years there
have been noiie, for tlu* reason that
they wVre all being caught or stop
pi^ at o' near the inoiithti of the dif
ferent !h reams. If this law is not
obeyed, it will simply mean that in
a few yea we will have no shad at
all in South Carolina, for the lessen
that the nature of the shad is to
come up the .streams to perfectly
clear water and there spawn; th<j(U
when the young shad are hatchcd
out, they return to the ocean, and
in time, come hack to the very river
in which they were spawned. It
can therefore very readily be seen
that if they are prevented from get
tin(c to their pawning grounds, that
within a few years there will be
none coming up our streams. Tho
(lovrrnment statistics show that tho
shad come back to the rivers in which
they are l>red, and if they are pre
vented from returning to their breed
ing grounds in our riVers, that nat
urally it is only a matter of time
before none come back.
If you will give this information
to the people of our county through
the columns of your paper, I feel
sure that you will have rendered a
service to South Carolina, and I wish
to assure' you that the same will be
appreciated greatly by this Depart
