and nuts which had been sent us
from different places.
Sunday, December 3rd, the Kiwan
is Club of Rock Hill, with wives,
.sweethearts, and friends, stormed us
with a fine treat. We expected
three or four autos, an the commit
tee had notified us that they were
coming with a Thanksgiving treat
for the children. One of our children
said that was a big eommittco, as
there were fifteen automobile loads

the Winthrop College Faculty were
in the crowd. One of the lady
teachers sang a beautiful song for
us, and we all had a good time. ?
We want to thank one and nil of
these good people for their kindness.
I have often heard that "Every
Hose has its Thorns." So along with
these good things there comes a sad
letter from a devoted pastor. This
good preacher feared that we would
not get the force of his appeal, so
he got a doctor to write a statement
which he enclosed in his letter.
The doctor says that the father of
these children is dead, and their
mother has pellagra, and the chil
dren need immediate relief. The
pastor says that it is a distressing
case, and something must be done for
these children at once.
Friends of the needy childrep, if
I could only get you to read the sad
letters on our desk, I verily believe
you would demand that the Home
be enlarged at once, and that demand
would be backed up by the where

A most extraordinary distilling
outfit was discovered and raided near
the city of Greenville Saturday by
sheriff's officers. The still was an
underground affair, built entirely in
a dugout measuring about 10 by 12
feet. A quantity of mash and beer
was found.
Mrs. Theodore lloosevell received
the first stamp of the new five-ocnt
series, portraying the bust of President
Roosevelt.

father and son, were sentenced by
Judge NVatkins in the Federal ?? uvt
at Anderson, Tuesday, to pay fines
of $500 each or be confined in the
jail at Spartanburg until it is paid,
following their conviction in 9 liquor
case. In passing sentence on the
pair Ju<)ge Watkins said in part: "I
regard the bootlegger in many r?
spects as the inferior of the thief

According to the auditor's abstract
as filed with comptroller general,
there are only three "gold or silver
watches," valued at $100 in Colleton
county. The abstract also shows
that there is only $1,100 worth of
office furniture and shop equipment
in the county.
William Hanson, Kdgeficld c<?unty
farmer, was killed Monday afternoon
by being struck on the head by the
limb of a tree he was cutting down.
John Walker,( a white farmer of
Aiken, shot and killed Claude Jones,

a negro, Tuesday in a quarrel that
i grew out of a gambling dispute.
Three men were killed and six in
jured when a still exploded at Phila
delphia, Va., Tuesday night. The
[still, a 100 gallon outfit, was located
' in a barn. Two of the injured men
are said to be fatally injured.
James Couzens, mayor of Detroit,
has been appointed to the United
States senate by Governor Alex J.
Groesbeck of Michigan, to succeed
Truman H. Newberry, resigned.
John Wanamaker, Philadelphia
merchant and philanthropist, is very
ill at his home in that city.
A man, his wife and four children
were found dead in their home at
Lancaster, Ohio, one day last week.
It was at first suspected that they
had been poisoned by some one hav
ing put poison in their food. State
chemists, after analyzing the stom
achs of the victims and making oth
er examinations, have decided that
the family was a victim of carbon
monoxide gas from a defective stove.
Exports of American cotton for
the month of October totalled 798,
664 bales, valued at $93,923,000. .
Dr. Burleigh Kellam was Ucquitted
by a jury at Norfork, Va., Wednes
day of the charge of performing an
illegal operation on a young'woman
of Cape Charles. The charge of
murder against the doctor as the re
sult of the operation, was nol pressed
hy the prosecuting attorney.
Two negroes were killed at Guiena,
Va., Wednesday, when a truck they
were driving was struck by an- ex
press train on a grade crossing.
Bandits firing from a stolen auto
mobile killed one policeman *and fa
tally injured another at Columbus,
Ohio, Wednesday. One baiylit was
killed and two others captured, one
of them after attempting suicide.
New York bootleggers and rum
runners, who have grown wealthy at
the game, are surrounding -them
selves with armed guards to protect
their well filled pockets and their
diamonds from footpads and hold
ups.
The British government, which has
been scrapping some warships that
were little more than junk to begin
with, announces that it will do no
more scrapping until some of the
other parties to the Washington
agreement show signs of compliance.
William Goodsell Rockefeller, son
of the late William Rockefeller, and
nephew of John D. Rockefeller, died
in his New York home yesterday of
pneumonia.
Two dead and 88 injured was the
toll taken in the burning of the High
Point community sehoolhouse near
Covington, Ga., Tuesday afternoon
when the structure in which 98 chil
dren were engaged in studies, was de
stroyed by flames. A careful check
today showed that all the others had
been accounted for and identified.
The dead were: James Steele, little
son of John J. Steele, and the eight
year old son of Charles Bechelor.
These pupils were in the room of
Mrs. Oscar Grant, who heroically
stood by the window and dropped
forty children to the ground bef re
the floor of her room gave way and
she was engulfed in flames. She
was unable to save the two boy?<.
Investigation Wednesday showed 17
of the children were suffering from
broken limbs as the result of the 20
foot drop. Four children swallowed
flames and anxiety is felt over their
condition. The name of Miss Mary
Howe, home demonstration agent, is
being linked with that of Mrs. Grant
as a heroine of the tragedy. She
helped rescue children from the burn
ing building and then, without rest
ing, jumped into her automobile and
dashed five miles to Covington fur
