The snake seemed to t>e looking up
!))<> tree. I kicked some trash on It,
hut It paid no attention to it at all.
Then I discovered some imrtlolea of
hickory nut falling and immediately
remembered thontorie-s I had *o often

ho I stepped ivack about twelve or flf-;
toon feet and sat down with my book

wan watching. lu a few momenta a
nut dropped and I saw a squirrel
run out on a llinh to net another. He

it slowly colling as if getting ready
for business and It began- to ring its
rattles very slowly and very low. 1
looked back at the squirrel and saw

down. It would turn back and forth
as If very restless. It droj ped the
nut it had just picked and slowly
went Imck t<? the tree and hegan to
come down but it stojip??d at every
1 im>? ami looked at the snake..
I soon found It was paying no atten
tion to me. ns- l iimsI uiy hat t?? brush
mosquitoes and it nppear<?d ihU to ??H'
it at all. After It passed the limbs of
the tree in its descent It would crawl
very slowly for a few inches ami halt
a moment. 1 -romemliered I had been
told that if one were to shoot a snake
at such time the squirrel would fall
dead, but I wanted to see the finish.
So I wit there ami watched. In a few
Twftnutes the squirrel came to within
alsnit three feel of the ground, when
?Middenly the Miake struck and ealight
it. by the head.'
The squirrel never moved, not ??von
a foot or Its tail. The snake hob I It a
moment ami looked around as if defy
inir any one <>r any thing to Interfere.
Then it proceeded to lick the squirrel
a Utile bit. but not nearly as much as
one would imagine before he slowly
swallowed it. Then 1 sh?M the snake
and booked a'sharp stick in it< head
or mvk. as the head was shot off. and
1 dragged it back toward home until
1 came to some hands working in the.
bay fjeld. when 1 cut the snake open
and took out the -qiiirrel for all to see.
Now here i< another -t.range thing:

groes killed another rattler near the
(?lie I had killed and dragged there.
Tliey say it followed the trail. I>1*1
it really ibrsoV 1 do not know. And
did the snake charm the squirrel? It

I am in my fifty *i\th year I
