A adored watchman at a grade
crossing was a witness for the rail
road coin|?any during the trial of an
accident case. Both on >dlrect and
cross examination bo testified that be
had swung a lantern for at least three
minutes prior to tho imssing of the
train, and, that In spite of this warn
ing, the plaintiff* deceased husband
had driven across the track.
For more than two hours he was
subjected to a severe cross-examina
tlou. Every conceivable question was
n?ked him by the plaintiffs attorney,
bnt bis testimony remained -mnsfrnken.
The lantern was offered in evidence,
and the witness testified just how he
held it and the manner in which he
waved it. and after Iiq retired from the
[ stand, the Jury w as so convinced < f his
truthfulness that they brought in a
verdict for the defendant.
'"Tell me, Sam," the attorney for the
.railroad company said as he congratu
lated him later with a tea dollar bill,
"didn't you feel nervous on the stand?"
"I sho did. Boss," the perfect witness
replied, "I was seared to death that
[somebody was goim; to ask m e if that
there lantern was lighted."
The state of Alabama on Tuesday
voted a $25,000,000 bond issue for
roads.
