HANT INDOOR WINDOW BOX
Small expense and Little Effort Re
quired to Have Ornamentation
Always Pleasing
t
To the real garden lover the charm of
the garden can |>e extended all through
the winter months, for a window gnir
den gives cheer to a room and Is al
ways a source iif interest atul delight.
Window boxes can be kept charming
for tlie entire year by lining them with
hardy begonias ami ferns, suggests the
Christian Science Monitor. Another In- j
teres ting arrangement, all in green, lb
of small palms and ferns of the long
leaved Host on type, and asparagus
"xpreUgori to trail over the edge. Prim
rose, the Chinese or common variety,
and Irish Ivies make a window box
with n delightful color note. For late
autumn; If the room is kept cool, some
of the darling Utile chrysanthemums
in brown and yellow are effective and
they* will last several weeks. For the
late winter or early spring (lowering
bulbs may be used among ferns.
In planting a winter garden on*
yiusi alw-ays remember thai plants do
not thrive near steam heat, and if the
radiator Is under the window a broad'
shelf should be placed t?ix inches or
more above it aud the box set back on
the shelf, so that i&e force of hot air
does not come too near the foliage.
The small expense and the little ef
fort required for a beautiful Indoor
window box piakes It possible Tor
every home-ioving 'woman to have one.
Restoration Vorth While. *
Why hulld new cottages? Why not
repair old ones? These were the ques
tions asked by the Society for the Pro*
tectiun of Ancient Huntings. in Eng
land, and answered successfully. The
society took a veritable relic of old
England, Ave centuries old If a single
day, in the shape of two dwellings un
der one roof at Orlnkstone, In Suffolk.
-The thick tlfabers, seasoned to the
quality of Irifti, were good, hut the
roof, tlte -floof and the windows were
defective. - In fact the building was
habitable <miy on a portion of the
ground floor. .Nothing daunted, the so
ciety set to work and, by judicious
restoration, made the old dwellings as
sound as a bell. The total cost of the
work, including the freehold site, was
$,3,012. A new cottage would have cost
at least $4,700, not including (he site.
Is it any wonder that the society is
casting round for other old haunt* to
conquer? ? Christian Science Monitor.
