These six day grind* drew great

ami watched the men a* they walked
or trotted their way wearily round
ami round the area. Prixe tnoftey wax
li i K and the contests had an Interna
tlonal flavor, the Kngllsh champion.
Charlie Howell, being a participant on *
more than one occasion, and the win- <
ner of one competition Important from
a prize money viewpoint.
"I,epper" Uughes and I'addy .-Fit/,
gerahl of Long island Oity ttero lie j
variably ou hand when these so, -called
endurance tests were decided, and each j
had a devoted following. Both were !
tall and allm In build, while Howell |
was stocky, and had a short, quick ;
stride which rolled the miles behind j
him In a way Which made It difficult
for his competitors to keep near him.
England has long been fatuous for the
quality of her distance runners, and
Howell was one of her very host.
The death of Hughes will also re
call to many the New York 'of the
days when there was not much life
after dark north of Twenty-third ;
street and the out-of-town visitor
eager to see the sights had to content
himself with what the Bowery and
Sixth avenue afforded.
FURS NO MARK- OF RICHES
Even the Poorest Farmers of Rou
mania Wear Collars and Hats
of Finest Aatrakan.
The poorest fanner in the Near Hnftt
can a fiord astrakan collars and hats;
and the man without a good piece of
fur on his overcoat collar or a whole
fur lining is almost always a beggar
or x foreigner from America or west- j
erp K 11 rope, where these tilings com j
money.
Nobody wears more fur lining or
higher astrakhan hats than the cab |
drivers.
These men comport themselves \vith__
a dignity equaled by no single other,
class of men in the world, unless It
be by the priests of the Greek church.
A long black plush garment, tight
at the collar and belted at the waist
by a bath robe cord, envelopes them
from head to foot. Because it is
lined with fur, this garment makes a
man look far bigger than he really Is.
And the high conical aatrakan cap, !
like a curly dunce cap, adds to his
si afure.
Many of the drivers are said to be
long to a curious religious sect orig
inating in Russia, a sect involving
celibacy. They spurn friendship with
women as likely iu decrease their love
for their hoTses.
Whether this is true or not. It in
certain UihI the cab drivers are the J
most picturesque figures l*i Bucharest,
outshining e\en the corseted and
rouged Roumanian army officers.
