The first shelling of iho air brought
? out great crowds. Bombs and the
j kind of "maroons" used to warn ICng
j laud of air raids during the wnr were
fired into the heavens for more than
two hours, The next morning two
clouds, apparently about the size of or
dinary bedspreads, registered appear J
aiNv in the -trine, hut that was all.
The second bombardment brought no
better re.s.ults, though the sky became'
overcast. Then The Dully Kxpitw, 1
urged on by a number of readers who1
advised the uowtspaper to'".siioot thej
cloud*" sent up a plane equipped with
small bombs.
The aeroplane swung up above the
clouds with bombs fixed at the end ->f
a fifty foot cable. The bombs were
trailed into the center of the clouds,
and set off by electricity. The cur
rent of displayed aid resulting from
the explosion sent the rda ne sliding
oft' at an angle of forty five degrees.
A few moments later the pilot drove
back through the lw>mlHHl cloud and
emerged damp from head to foot, but
the Hufferers 0,000 feet below were still
parched.
