low nientality.
(J. Croft Williams,, secretary of the
state board ??f public welfare, was
tlu.- first witness. Il?> testified that
he had examined nil of tin* defend

of I>r. Arabella Feldkamp of New
York, fopveseuting tin? National Com
mittee of Mental Hygiene, who had ex
amined all of the defendants and
found them io bo mentally deficient.
Miss Louise Bishop, field agent for
the state hoard of public welfare, was
next placed on the , stand and testified
that she had examined all of the de
fendants' and found them to be eon
slderahly below the average mentally.
She said Mrs. Julia Cook, -18 years of
age, had a mind of a normal child of
nine years old; Ira C. Cook, 10 years
old. a mind of seven years; Henry
Wheeler, 20 years old, a mind of nine
years; James Barfield, OS years old.
a mind of eight years ;? Sarah Mimic
Ox>k, 1(1 years old, a mind of seven.
She explained the difference between
the physical age and tho mental age,
and said the defendants were normal
physically but their minds had been
refftrded, caused no doubt by the sur
roundings under which they had been
brought up.
The state did not introduce anv wit

defense's testimony Solicitor Callison
asked the jury to find a verdict of
guilty with rccQinnicy.dat ion to mercy
11 said lie did not f?*.?t that tho stale
of South Carolina should ask for a
more severe sentence under the circum
stances. The attorneys for the defense
also asked for life sentences.
At the conclusion of the arguments
Judge S?>;is(. said that since all par
ties had asked for the same verdict
the only thing for him to do was to
direct a verdict, which he did, and
sentenced them t<? life imprisonment
in the s|}jt(> penitentiary. None of
the prisoners at bar seemed to <a re

after sentence was passed.
The five defendants were represent

Cyrus I.. SJiealy ami C T. Craham. all
being appointed by the court.
