Winner of Congressional Medal Hurled
At Kembert Cemetery.

Corporal James David Herlot, world
war hero, wan laid to rest Saturday
afternoon In the cemetery* fit Hem
bert's ehurch In this county, his
family having worshipped there for
generations, The members of the
American l.egioft of Lee county and
a great number of relatives and
friends from this and other counties
attended the funeral. His body ar

rived in New York from France sev
eral days ago and reached here Friday
with military escort. It will be re
membered how during the world war
the county was thrilled at the brave
exploit for which he was awarded the
congressional medal of honor. He
attacked and captured single-handed a
(fernian machine gun nest and was
killed on the afternoon of the same day
while engaged in a similar exploit.
Corporal Ilerlot was the son of Mrs.
Carrie Herlot of this county and of
the late Itobert Larochc Herlot. He
was a. member of the Thirtieth divl
| sion.

peas, and soy beans will , improve the
soils because they have certain bac
teria on their roots which can take
nitrogen from the air (something
which no plant can do alone) and fix

form that it is available for the growth

The amount of nitrogen which a
I leguminous crop will, add to the soil
, depends upon the fertility of the soil
' and the size of the crop grown. Ordi

$502,710.80 from the motor vehicle
license fund collected by the stvite
highway commission for the first three
months of the year. according

Dedge and Meddcrs were former
partners in the show business. They
hit upon the plan to put horns ou a
negro and tour the country with him
an the "only horned negro In captivity."

and made them appear like real hoi us.

said, until the uegro while on a spree
at Yaldosta, Ga., several yearn ago,
disclosed the fake.
Dedge and Medder-s had made a
fortune and returned here,- Meddcrs
becoming an. overseer on the Dedge
plantation. A year ago because of
personal difficulties Medders left the
farm and oi?ened a law office and be
came a Justice of the peace. He was
shot down in front of his office oue
night ^and I>edgc was among the men
arrested in connection with the Shoot/1
ing, the automobile from which the
shots Were fired being traced to bis
home.
Koad Contract Let.
The contract for the rebuilding of the
public highway from the west side ot
the river bridge to the Richland
county has been let to Stewart and
?Jones, of ltock Hill, and work has
already commenced. Some parts of
the new road on 'the Richland county
side has been opened up for travel and

Ducks Met I>eath When They Came
Together at High Speed.
Not long ago, at "The Bluff'" 011
Cooper ^river, the old negro known by
everybody thereabouts. asv Peter pick
ed up two dead teal ducks, says the
Charleston News and Courier. The
bill of one of the ducks had been
driven through the crop and Into the
breast of the other. It was evident
that the fwo ducks had collided in the
air while flying at high speed and that
the accident had been fatal to both of
them.

mystery involved, this "is certainly on*
of the most interejitlug of the several
queer episodes which have been
brought to light in one way or an
