Though a member of as many fraternal orders as my opponent, I never listed those mej
berships in any literature I distributed, nor referred to them in any speech or private convj
sation during the campaign, nor did I wear any insignia of any o*f them. I would scorn toil
office on fraternal order membership. I respect too highly my membership in orders whi^
have admitted me to their ranks to seek to use them as stepping stones to office.
I did mention my service as a soldier in the Spanish-American and world wars, not
cause I thought double military service at the call of my Country qualified me for civic offij
but because it was a guarantee of my patriotism, and because one of my opponents oflj
said on the stump, that other things being equal, the voters ought in casting their ballots

My opponent in the most general terms says that lie is in favor of labor. I was the o|
candidate who made specific declarations, satisfactory to labor and fair to capital. I
this at the first campaign meeting in Columbia and at a number of other meetings during
campaign. I have m*ver been a corporation lawyer, and havd always been supported by
votes of the working men of my county. They know I am their friend because I have pro!
my friendship to them.
I have not been a factionali>t and have not appealed to any factional feeling or
dice in this campaign. We can never have the needed harmony in South Carolina if the
sions of the past are to be permitted to determine the votes of today. My opponent preacl
