According to Corbett's story, he and
his wife won1 awakened last night about
11 o'clock by.flames shooting up in front
*f his home, which, along with his. farm
buildings were threatened.
He said that he had cane stacked iu
front oJt his house to the height. St thVtt
feet paralelling the public highway, and
this was afire with the flames shooting
toward the house. When he had the

his house came back up the road. He
averred that one of the party sajd : "He

Corbett said he was standing in dense
smoke ennmatiug from the smoldering
coals and they did not see him.
"When this threat was made." said
Corbett, I warned the party that 1 would
protect my wife and my home a( all
hazards and after I had spoken, one of
the men. a hoarse voiced man. Jones
Sal ley, 1 think exclaimed: "I?amn you,
we will kil3 you !" With this. of
the men got out of the fi\>nt of tin* car
aud a<lvaucc<l towards me., with their
haixN in their hip tickets aud two other
men left the rear of the car with their
hands in their side, pockets like they were
going to draw their knivesA^ These last
two advanced as if they were trying to
cut me off from the rear. I then becan
shooting."
Corbe.lt said that when he first discov
ered the fire he studied an odor of either
gasoliuc or kerosene, and he is of the
opinion that some member of the party
sprinkled the cane and then ignited it.
He was of the opinion that. the mem
ber* of the party who live at Halley were
d.riuking. He claims that he was <*>ld
sober and has not taken a driuk of in
toxicating liquor during the past eight
years. He could attribute no cause for
the men attempting to burn his house
as he alleged.
Corbett was formerly chief of .police
of Sal ley and is now farming. He is
abou/t six feet tall, of sparse, powerful
frame clean cut face and piercing, fear
less eyes. When seen at the *tate pYis
on he was calm and collected and no
element of nervousness was apparent.
He said that he came to Columbia to
give himself up to avoid possible further
trouble.
" He said Jhat he has large family

Jones Sal ley, who is desperately wound
ed. but has a fighting chance. a?<rording
to his physician tonight, was brought to
Columbia early this morning in a car and
? placed in n locnl ho**pital.
He wa? <hot. three times. One of
the bullets went through the fore part
of the head, penetrating both eye balls
and blinding him. Two entered the left
arm between the elbow and shoulder.
One of these lodged in the chest, this
la-4 bullet being the only one in bis
body. He will be operated on tomorrow
