The Home Rector says: "The rec
ord# of A. 13. F. hospitals show that
seven or eight of every ten wounded
soldiers were lacerated by fragments -
of shell and other missiles which even
thin armor plate would luive kept
out.

produce body armor which would not
be difficult to carry and which would
resist the Impact of a machine-gun
bullet at fairly close range.

gineering division of the ordnance de
partment a body defense, Including a
light front and body plates, weighing

pounds. The plates were lined with
sponge rubber. One lot 'of 5.000 were
manufactured and sent abroad for ex
periment. fhere was also developed,
manufactured and sent over to France
for test a heavy breast plate with
thigh guards, weighing twenty-seven
pounds, capable of stopping machine
gun bullets at 150 yards.

Dig for Egyptian Temples.
An appeal for funds to carry on the
excavation of Egyptian antiquities on
n larger scale than ever before con
templated was sent out by the Egyp
tian Exploration Fund from Its Amer
ican headquarters at Boston, the New
York Times states. About $10,000 Is
needed to reopen the excavation of
ancient civilization where many relics
were found before the war stopped the
work. The appeal says:
"Two monumental undertakings are
the clearance of the eleventh and
eighteenth dynasty temples of Delr el
Banari, visited by every tourist at
Thebes, and at Abydos, the Oslrelon,
the temple of the underworld, dedi
cated by Merenptah, I'haraoh of the
Exodus, and richly decorated by him
with texts from the .'Book of the
Dead.' This great excavation, halted
by the war, employed 083 fellaheen
(native workmen) and awaits comple
tion. It is the one remaining archi
tectural puzzle of Egypt."
