Captain Alvin H. Dean, au old Con
federate and highly rejected and well
known cHlsen of Greenville died la?t
Saturday.
He Wanted to Know.
A well-knowu Sr. Louis society worn*
an has some very Interesting and Id*
telllgent grandchildren, and this In the
story she tells upon herself. Her little
grandson, looking piu/.led, said to her:
"Grandmother, how does It come that
your name Is Browp and father's name
is Smith, When you are his mother?"
These are,, of course, not the names,
but they wfll dp for the story.
?Til explain f dear," said grandmoth
er. "You see; I had several names.
First my name was White, then I mar
ried your father's father, Mr. Smith,
and I became Mrs. Smith, and that Is
y<*ur father's name. Then he died and
I married Mr. Brown.''
"And where Is Mr. Brown?" asked
the child.
"He Is dead, too," said grandmother.
"Then what will be the name of the
next man you will marry?"
"Well, I couldn't say right off," said
grandmother. "I'll have to. think about
that."
Why Not Raise More Sheep?
The fur thut Warms a monarch
warmed the bear. But the wool that
warms a sheep makes two good spits
for a man.
Only one sheep In twelve living to
day Is ah American- sheep, although
Americans require a quarter of all the
fleeces e\rery yeah
^-Farmers and ranchers could double
their flocks and still they would not
supply enough wool for our home use,
declares "Grlad" in the Philadelphia
Press. We need In the United States
more than a sheep for every person,
and that accounts partly for your dear
lartib chops and leg of mutton.
But It isn't expensive wool alone
that boosts the price of your new
spring suit.
The wool In a $f)0 suit stands the
maker less than a tenth of what you
pa_v for It. ' '

In tho day* before the war the castle ,

In gold. tho money being part of the
war Indemnity paid hy Franco In 1H71. j
There It was kept "for the purpose of j
Immediate use In case of war." What
happened to this gold reserve In 1014
Is not known, hut uu Interesting side
light Is thrown on tho great treasure
chest hy the account which has just
come to hand from Berlin describing
how gome 20.000, OtM) lei was recently
abstracted from the "citadel at 8pan
dau." during the dlsturbancea which
followed the signing of the armistice.
The money, which was part of the
amount hurriedly removed from Rou

cause there was no room for It In tho
Julius tower." Now, what tho outaide
world Is Interested to know Is : Waa
this Roumanian money crowded out
of the Julius tower because the Julius,
tower was already filled to overflow
ing with specie? To be sure It wus a
large sum that claimed admlaslon, no
less than fi00.000.000 lei, but then any
one who knows the Julius tower knows
that It Is a large place. '
PROVED BOON TO AUTOIST
Woman Who Devised Magnetized
Screwdriver Calls It Her Moat
Valued Helper.
"I magnetized a screwdriver by hold
ing It dose to a dynamo for a few min
utes, nearly two years ago, and It is
still my most valued helper when It
Is necessary for me to do repair work
on my car," writes Ethel Webb, In the
Electrical Experimenter.
"It Is a great help when working
around the car to have this magnetized
screwdriver to plcf up screws and
small pieces of the machinery which
drop down Inside, out of my reach.
"In setting screws It Is Invaluable;
simply pick up the screw by touching
the head with the magnetized screw
driver, and It may Instantly be set In
place with only one hand. It does
away entirely with the annoyance of.
the screw slipping away and getting
lost, as It so often does. I always
carry It In the tool box, and find' the
other fellow appreciates It when I
find him having car troubles on 'Some
lonely bit of road."
Magazine Syringe.
Among the war inventions that prob
i ably will prove valuable in peace time
Is a magazine hypodermic syringe
that may be used 20 times Without re
filling. Obviously Its chief merit Is
that of convenience when physicians
and surgeons are working under lire
and in dark dugouts where continual
recharging of syringes entails difficulty
? and retards operations.
? The Instrument is supplied with a
platinum needle which permits sterili
zation in a flame. The cap that pro
tects It, when not In use, Is kept filled
with Iodine or alcohol. When large
numbers of persons are being Inocu
lated with typhoid serum, for Instance,
an instrument such as the magazine
syringe evidently saves much time.
Roosevelt at Panama.
President Itoosevelt visited Panama
In 1906, and It was the first time a
president of the United States found
It "advisable to step on territory not
beneath the flag of the United States."
The custom was that the president
should not leave the country during
his term of office, but ther^ Is no law
about It. President Roosevelt went to
Panama on this occasion to visit and
inspect the site of the Panama canal.
He did not visit Europe during his
term of office, but at its close on re
turning from his hunting trip In Af
rica.
Many Have Ruined Health.
"The greater proportion of people
are born healthy and their way of
living makes them sick," fays a bulle

of 111 health and disease. Apparently
our population Is 100,000,000; actually
It Is only TO.000,000. This Is the re

eration, not enough air and sunshine,
Impure and Insufficient water drink
ing; alcohol. caffHn and nlcotin addic

drugs and patent medicines."

According to Prof. Vaughn Mac

Hawaiian race In rapidly becoming ex
tinct. This disappearance of "one of
the finest physical types known In the
history of the human race" Is due to
the introduction by White men of al

having been known In Hawaii before
the advent of the white man.
