the First division of the American arjny
which recently gave shows at Moitta
baur, Is going on the road in Germany
and perhaps will continue Its tour In
Belgium, France and England. Ordera
were Issued at headquarters giving the
circus permission to hold a fottr-day
exhibition at Cologne. The trip Is to
be made at the Invitation of the Brit
ish army of occupation. German civil
ians ore to be permitted to attend the
shows. Four hundred soldiers, 800
army horses and an elephant, bears
and other trained animals belonging to
Hagenback, the animal dealer, will
travel by special trains.

American Red Cross Lays Affliction of
Polish Children to 8tarved -
Mothers.
Warsaw, Poland. ? The abnormal
number of children born blind In this
country during the last three years Is
due mainly to the malnutrition of
mothers, according to a report Issued
by the American Red Cross. The in
creasing amount of blindness among
children at birth was thought at first
to herald the advent of some new
war disease. But investigation by the
American experts proved that the fam
ished condition of the mothers reacted
on the eyesight of their Infants.

June, 57,919 graves of American
soldiers had been registered by
the grave registration service In
Europe. They are distributed

hole whs kindly kicked through the
others.
This la a precise Instance of their
methodical thefta. When the people
who lfved In the house were turned
out by the Germaus they took away
the few papers that were In the safe
which was fast to the wall; they left
the key on {he safe door and the door
ajar, as much as to say that there wan
no need to break It open. On the
safe I found a short hatchet, by means
of which the door had been smashed.
Is this destruction for its own sakeT
No, this is methodical destruction.
The safe would eventually jUave to be
replaced, and very likely by one of
German make.

A British sergeant major, In ad
dressing the recruits at a training
Mtuiiun, spoke of tho soldierly duties
that they would he called upon to per
form, and conclude^ by saying:
"Be proud of your regiment. It's
your home for the war. So stick to It
and stick to your comrades. I never
tire of telling recruits a story of two
men of our Second battalion In the
Dardanelles expedition. A blizzard
and a washout swept away a lot of
our chaps. The two I ain talking
about struggled on and found sortie
sort of shelter, and there they sat
down to rest. The younger could have
got away and come to camp, but he
wouldn't leave his pal alone In the
storm and darkness and snow.
"The next morning they were found
together, asleep for good ? frozen stiff.
The younger had hie arms round his
pal. He held a bit of broken biscuit in
?each hand and there were biscuit
crumbs frozen into the mustache ofv

The celebrated French airman,
Georges Dombrlval, has utilized the
well-known instinct which scientists
have long observed Is possessed by
snails. For some unknown reason, ?
snail when placed on an inclined plane
crawls toward the highest part.
When M. Dombrlval was informed j
of this he placed on the upper plane
of * his Maurlce-Farman machine 88
pounds of snails, two-thirds of which
were the large, slow snails of Bour
gogne, beloved by epicures, the remain-,
der of smaller add more agile variety.
After rising to about 1,500 feet he was
able to take his hands off the controls
for the reet of his two hours' flight.
The snails moved in a mass toward the
upper part and re-established the
equilibrium whenever the machine
dipped, either laterally or longitudinal
ly, thus keeping the airplane in per
fect line of flight.
Hot One for Lawyers.
Here Is a hot one on lawyers and a
certain sort of sportsman.
An attorney was arrested for violat
ing the gome laws ? catching 10 fish
out of season. He pleaded guilty, but
when $30 per flsh was the fine Im
posed he withdrew his plea and got a
brother lawyer to defend him. The
Jury, In spite of the plea of guilty,
brought In a verdict finding him guilty
of catching one flsh only, and fixed the
fine at $10. One of the Jurors ex
plained to the angry game warden as
follows :
"Yes, we knew he pleaded guilty
and admitted catching 10 fish. But
the Jury, you know, were all of the
same mind. He was a lawyer AND a
fisherman."
Prohibition in Lithuania.
Prohibition, which grew up over
night in America, has long been an is
f.aue in Lithuania, the small Baltic re
public that is asking for a self-govern
ment that it has long demonstrated its
ability to use. Lithuania has a small
brewery and a still In almost every
home. It has little Intoxication. And
it has a prohibition society with 172
branches and 29,000 members through
out the country.

tly* Secretary of War, the adjutant gen
eral's office today urged that the mini
mum strength of the companies of the
National Guard be made sixty-five in
stead of one hundred men, and the tem
jmrary recognition, of the officers who
organized the companies.
National Guard officers and the mili
tary department** of the various States
are requesting that the reorganisation of
the National Guard be placed on a basis
which will make it such an organization

sent requirements of a minimum of one

sible to reorganise National Guard com
panies, particularly in the sparsely set

The Governor's conference meeting at
Halt Lake City, l/tali, lias the question
of the National Guard under considera
tion, and it is understood that it will
recommend that the companies have a
minimum strength of sixty-five. men.
