Y. M. <'? V Notes.
The V. M. C. A. which was organised
a little* <?ver two mouths- ago by a few
of the leading colored men of our city,
is rapidly growing into an organisation
of {tower on enlightenment. Having be
gun with only about eight or ten mem
bers we now have su<veede<l in enroll
ing over fifty members. We >are glad
to state that our" membership does not
consitft simply of young men whose fickle
curiosity has led thorn t?> a Wend these
meetings simply to see what was going
on but the ministers, tin* business men.
the oldest and mont prominent citizens
have joined with us and tind food to.
refresh and quicken their minds. We aie
yet in our infancy but we hope to make
the little hall that hlas been placed
at our disposal through the generosity
of Dr. J. IV Pickett, a temple of thought
ami light whose influence will be feJt
throughout our community. We have
been favored on various occasions by
addresses- from some of our prominent
white friends. Mr. L. T. Mills. Mr, M.
It. Heymnn, Hev, F. 11. Harding and
recently during an address Mr. 0. W.
Hirchiuore, the edrtor of the Messenger
gave a most beautiful and eloquent out
line of the life of Joseph. The words
.of^lu^^umativ-ntioH*? Christian? jccirtienTrTr
could not but give us strength and de
termination. We are attempting to
create and develop the spirit of Christian
brotherhood as well as devising some
means of amusement and instruction for
our young men. Today the whole world
realizes more than ever the necessity
of organization but we realize in its
fullness that no organization is secure
which is not founded upon Christian
principles. We profess Ourselves to. be a
deniwratic people but there can not be
real democrat')' without Christianity.
When the spirit of Christian brother
hood is spreading throughout the world
and men begin to realize more fully
their Christian duties and obligations
then and only then will the peace and
harmony in comlmuiiitics and throughout
the world he assured. We invite our
friends to visit our me?<t.ings on Sun
day afternoons at six o'clock, upstairs
over I>r. Pickett's drug store. Hear
our discussion. Discussion last Sunday J
