WatMon got back last Friday from over
seas. They belonged to the famous
Rainbow Division that saw such hard
lighting in the A>ngonne Forest. The
boys say they wimkl not, tak^p$50() for
their war experience, but it would take
lots more tihan that to get them to go
through it all again. The city of Ver
dun, they say, is the most awful sight
of destruction tibey saw anywhere in the
war zone ? mot a house was left stand
ing in what was once a beautiful and
i prosperous r reach city.
Mr. Sam Bradley got back last Fri
day from Texas, where ho had gone with
Mrs. Bradley and Miss Anna 'to visit
Mrs. Bradley's brother Whom they had
not seen for several years. He reports
that crops all along the (*)'tton belt
have suffered more oV> less from too
much rain, especially, cotton.

of Bishopville, but now of Bartow, Fla.

The boys are coming home as fast

Take Parrott and Haskell Galloway got
back last Friday. Several others came
t along with them but we could not get
their names.
Miss Annie Boyd Wilkinson came
round and bade un goodbye just before
she starts! on her long trip of 10.000
miles across the Pacifie to China, where
she will spdnd six or eig*ht months with
her brother. I)r. J. R. Wilkinson in his
mission field. We wi?<li her a safe and
pleasant trip.
Mr. R. O. .Alexander, cotton buyer ? f
Charlotte, was here last week and has
bought 700 more bales of cotton from
Mr. J. M. ITearon. Mr. Alexander Is
the first cotton dealer to ship cotton
direct from Bisbopville to England. A
through bill of lading was obtained and
this cotton was shipped direct to Liv
erpool. Mr. Alexander is rather an
optimist on the cotton situation.
Mr. S. L. Austin bought for May
bank & Q*_ exporters 728 bales of
short staph* cotton Tuesday from Mr.
J. M. Hearon at 83 cents. Bishopville
always manages to keep abreast of the
market, but how does, thin ? with the
700 bales of long staple sold last week
by Mr, Hearon to Mr. Alexander of
Charlotte with through bill of lading

Sheriff Hector, who was about 37
years of age, was serving his second
term as slierig ami had announced his
candidacy in the race next summer.
He was born in Glassy Mountain town
ship where he was elected a magistrate
at the age of 21, which position he left
to come to Greenville as a member of
the city police force.
After several years service on the
l>olice force, Sheriff Hector resigned to
make his tro^t. ami successful, race for
the office lie held at the time of his
death.
Tells of The Killing.
Greenville, June 5. ? The first story of
the circumstances which led to the kill
ing of Sheriff TIendrix., Hector by Jake
Gosnell, revenue agent, yesterday cauie

and jailor under R-ectofcJ- Kel'Jar was
the " sole wlbness <at the coroner's in
quest this morning. Ait the conclusion
of the testimony the jnry found that the
deceased had met his death from a gun
shot wound at the hands of Jake Gos
nell.
According to Keller's testimony what

"Gosnell was In Briscoe's garage hav
i.tug his car fixed. Sheriff Rector came
in and said to GowveH, 'Good morning,
Jake.' Gosnell replied : 'I didn't speak

thing to do with you.'" Then, accord
ing to tho witness, 'ReotJor said some
thing like " ' ? - ? > ? you, I wanted
t)o sbow you I could speak to you.
Ywi dirty ? ? ? ? I don't care
wihether you speak to me or not.' "
Then, in the language of the witness,
"Gosnell just got his gun and shot him."

Thousands Attend Funeral.
Greenville, July 6. ? A crowd conser
vatively estimated at 10,000 was at
Graceland Cemetery this afternoon for
the ^'fuuenal of Hendrix Rector, sheriff
of Greenville County, Who was shot
and killed Friday by Jake Gosnell,
special revenue officer. It was the great
est oubpouring of citizens ,at any fun
eral ever held in the county and was
by far the longest procession, being over
a mile in length. Frpm all narts of
t)he ujiper section of the State friends
came to pay their tribute to the mem
ory of the picburesque young sheriff.

Sumter, July 3. ? About 8 o'clock last
evening Fit? Behre, who lives a short
distance out of town, rode in on his
bicycle and reported to the jxdice that
he had juat shot J. T, WeHs with

Behre, who has but recently returned
fir.sn the army, would give no details
but that Wells had shot at him firat.
Those sent to tfhe scene of the trag
edy, ?orae two mile? southeast of* the
city, found WeW-s lying just inside a
yard. Death se?med to lmve beeu in
stantaneous. A revolver with -two
empty chambers was flund.
Mr. Wells leaves his mother, two
sisters, and three WrotheA, all of whom
live in Sumter. His body will be in
terred at the local cemetery July 4 at
2 p. m. Th coroner's Inquewt developed
no cause for the shooting.
