Almost Two Hundred Thousand Now
in National Afmy.
Close to 175,000 negro rfoldier* are
now in ttao National Army. Of these
1,000 arc 'lino officers holding commis
sions of captain and first lieutenants.
There are approximately 250 negro
mecHcal officers In the Medical and
Dental Reserve Corps. The Army now
includes two divisions a" negro troops,
commanded by Ma J. Gen. O. 0. Ballon
and Brig. Gen. Boy (X Hoffman. These
two divisions, when fully constituted,
I will embrace pnaictleally all branches
of military service, including Infantry,
Engineers, Artlllerj , Signal Corps, Med
, ical Corps, and^servlce battalions with
men technically* trained in all branches
of scientific work.
< Made Trip to France.
Mr; Charlie Hough, the youngest son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hough, of this
city, has just returned from a trip to
France. The yoifng man left Norfolk,
Va., and joined a flotilla of thirty-one
other freight laden vessels from an
American port ?ud was on tbe high seas
fourteen days going over. After reach
ing a French port and discharging the
cargo the crew of the vessel spent pro
bably a nronthrand a half in port towns
along the French coast. Returning the
trip was made in tbe same number of
days the boat bdng-ln? ballast. Tbe
flotilla of freighters was convoyed by
an Amertoan cruiser and torpedo boat
destroyers.

alleged to bave defaulted with $19,
129.50 of-tbe City's funds, and who has
been mtasing since April 27. is under
arrest at JaCkgouvllle. Fla.T according
to information received, in Columbia to
night. M Ik soil's apprehension was
made known by John W. Richardson,
chief of the Columbia police depart
ment, in a wire to his associates. While,
it is not known definitely, It is pre
sumed from* Chief Richardson's wire
that Mlxson Is in the military vervlce
of the nation at the Florida .metroiw
iis,* as the telegram staged the police
Afllcev would have to. remain in Florida
a few days longer to arrange for Mix
son's transfer from camp.
- It is-iHhlerstood that Mlx.?on wrote
to a friend <?f fiLs in Columbia under
an assumed name, giving his address
and Ma4i?p tha t he would ' .shortly be
sent to France, The letter was placed
in the hands of Chief of Police Rich
ardson yesterday. It is said, and the
police chief re<K>gnlzed the handwriting
as tluft of Mlxson's and some of' the
phraseology as the missing man's. With
this alleged clue In his possession tho
chief left for Jacksonville yesterday
and, it Is presumed, located Mlxson and
immediately plakxnl Ttum under arrest.
I>eath of Good Colored Woman.
"Aunt" Ma&arcne Reynolds, an old
and highly respected colored woman,
dle<l at her home In Kirkwood Wednes
day. She was 72 years of ago and had
the respcct and esteem of both races.
She reared a large family of hoys and
girls who have all made good citizens.
She Is survived by several children and
her aged hw&and, "Uncle" Horace Ryy
nolds. Tommle Reynolds, one of her
sons who is now residing lb New York
city, came down yesterday to attend
the funCral.
Dr. Zemp Named Captain.

last Saturday charged with having

highly respected citizen, met a horri
ble death yesterday about 1 :30 p. m. at
fforton's saw mill about five miles from
McBee by being thrown against the saw

Mr. King. Death was instantaneous.
A Masonic funeral service was held at
McBee cemetery today at 10 o'clock.
Mr. King leaves a widow and fonr chil
dren.
