The sinkings of the past week show
a sWght diminution from the previous

made by a prominent German official
when America cant her lot with tho

"We do not fear the American sol
diers, because they canuot arrive in
time; what we fear is the intelligence
and devotion of one hundred million
Americans trained to a faith in indivi
dual initiative. The day that those
hundred millions act as one, that day
la Germany's doom*!''
Hastening the Doom.
To enable the hundreds of millions
of Americans to act as one is one of
the inuin objects of .the war savings
plan which the government is institut
ing as a mighty weapon against Ger
many. That is the underlying object
of the drive for war savings societies
which is being pushed during this
month, and through which millions of*
Americans are expected to pledge
themselves to stand pack of the array
and uavy by avoiding needless expen
ditures and theroby release 4io goods
and services which are needed to
equip the army and navy properly and
efficiently. It. Goodwyn Rhett, state
director for war savings, has issued
the following statement: s
"Joint the company of savers! Let
a company of savers back every com
pany of soldiers. The war savings
committee of your county is carrying
on a campaign this month for the for
mation of war savings societies. War
Savings Societies make it <pasy for you
to Join with others in saving A portion
Of your earnings as they come in and
Invest them in War Savings Stamps.
Every loyal man, woman, and child in
South Carolina should Join a War Sav
ings Society, not next week, but NOW.
Let us respond patriotically to the
government's call. Let us act as one.
