Alien Enemies Receive Fair Treatment.
The Interned Germans at the sta
tion at Hot Springs, N. C., are not
prisoners of war. 'lUe.v comprise of
ficers and crews of rne German mer
chant vessels which were held in the
"tTnited States at the time of the dec
laration of war.
These, aliens receive no funds from
the Government except compensation
for labor actually performed. Those
engaged In construction work get $20
a mouth, with. -.an -addit.iomU~~$5 - to.
foreman. Interned officers have not
been permitted to receive from any
source more than $10 a month and
crewmen not more than $5. Receipts
In excess of these amounts arc placed
to the credit of the aliens In banks.
Three plain hut ruustantlal meals
are- prepared each day. There Is no
waste, the same measures of economy
and conservation which are being urged
upon every American housewife being

Marrying For Insurance.
Waco, Texas, Dec. 14. ? No officer or
soldier at Camp McArthur will be per
mitted to marry without permission of
their regimental ? commander, accord
ing to an order just issued by Gen.
Ilaan, in charge of the camp.
The order, it is said, resulted from
a report from the war risk insurance
office at the camp that - women of
questionable character were coming to
Waco and other army camp cities with
the hope of gaining insurance bene
fits. The war risk insurance office also
announced it has reports that women
have gone from one army taipp to an
other marrying under different names
so as to Increase their insurance ben
British Vessels Smlc.
London, Dec. 17. ? One British and
Ave neutral merchanrmen, a British de
stroyer and four mine sweepers have,
been sunk in the North sea by German
naval forces.
The losses were the result of an at
tack on a convoy bound from Scotland
to Norway, Sir Eric Geddes, first lord
of the admiralty, announced today. The
total tonnage of the lost merchantmen
was 8,000.
Eighty-eight Scandinavians, two of
whom were women, and ten British,
were rescued toy four British destroy
ers detached from a cruiser squadron
which w4* _ hastened to the ^cene.

round. The taxpayer has to go to

Plans Are Made for Care of Injured.
The receiving hospital for United
States soldiers brought hack from Eu
rope. to he established at Staten Is
land. N. Y., will have a caimclty of
2.50Q beds. This marks the beginning
of a comprehensive plan for the care
of soldiers who are disabled in the
line of duty. It will be used only for
distribution.
From the Staten Island Institution
men will be transferred to general or
ppeeial treatment hospitals, sites for
which are now being selected through
out the country. Whenever possible,
Injured soldiers will lx? pent to places
near their own homes. They will be
tltted for trades to which they are
adapted, and at the time of discharge
the Government will assist them In re-,
turning to their projier places of in
dustry.

spectacle of women doing all manner
at heavy labor was never particular
ly unusual in Oerawny ev?. in pre
war days, but the sight of four women
barnesaed like horses and pulling a
plow was a distinct shock to' the travel
er who witnessed this scene along the
roadside in the state of Hess&Naswu.
The tourist stopped that night at
a nearby inn aud there, in conversa
tion with a number of German peas
ants, expresed surprise that women
should be driven to such drudgery. The
peasants were much aatonlshed when
informed that women in America sel
dom work at any task heavier than
household duties or light factory or
offlce toll.
