contradictory character of the otltclal
statements, hut In hcc^ialH'r, 11)10, the
British stormed Kl Arlsh and a few
days later defeated the Turk* at
Maghdabah. about Hxty miles to the
south on the same front. Two weeks
later the Invaders had Ixxmi driven out
of Kgypt and the British forces eroased
t he border Into Palestine.
There had been no hint an to Kng
land's intention to undertake a deflu
lte Invasion of the Holy I,and and It
was with Intense surprise that tin*
world learned on March 7 that the
British forces had captured Kl Khulll,
fifteen mile* south of Jerusalem. Kl
Khulll Is the modern name or ancient
I lehron.
Karly In Xownbcr the Hrltlsh ac
tively resulted In the capture of Her
sheha. forty miles south of Jerusalem.
Simultaneously a coastal column be
came at tlve. By November 7 the city
t>f (ia/.a was In their hands and the
British were pursuing the Turka
northward after having inflicted cas
ual ties estimated as In oxcopm of 10,
(HK).
By November 'J'J the British had
pushed within tlve miles of Jerusalem,
on the northwest, and on December 7,
<Jen. A Men by announce^ that he had
detlnlte ? possession of Hebron. Jeru
salem thus was virtually cut off on all
sh|es but the east.
Few details have come through since
that date but the inclrculatlng move
ment must have l>een carried o"l with
considerable rapidity. culminating in
the surrender of the city.
In sentimental and romantic as|>ect
the capture of Jerusalem far exceeds
even the fall of fable-crowned Bag
dad. The modern clt.v of Jerusalem
contains about 00.000 Inhabitants and
