Hev. Hurtling Makes Strong Appeal in
of Starving Artneni&its. *
Tftore are so many Culls upon the
guiierosity of c lit* Aiucrioan |>eopl? at
this time that one hardly knows in
which direction to tlrst turn to give
uitl. And yet, when the cry of hunger
from a starving people ??f Western
Asia (Domex to a community enjoying
the comforts of life, we cannot turn
a (leaf ear to the ap|>eat.
The terrible condition of the Ar
menians, Syrians, ami (?reek Christians
of Western Aula iih a result of the war,
the untold suffering of these homeless,
destitute exiles tind refugees, cannot
Ik.? fully tohl In words.
Netfrly three million are now facing
starvation. Four hundred thousand
orphans are today destitute in lllhlo
Lands, Unlike the woiuen and child
ren of Belgium. France and other lauds
these people cannot expect an appro
priation from the Government for re
lief because they are scattered raee?
to Which the United Statoj? canot le
gally make a loan.
These exiles have struggled through
.the that and suffering of an Kaatern
Summer only to face the more terrible
ordeal of the rigorous winter, without <
fo?M| and clything. Ih-cad winners gen
erally have perished through cruel mas
sacre, deiKutatlou or In the army Yet
practically all who. arc new destitute
were self supporting before the war
and the cruel treatment of hostile ua
tlons. Their only hojie now to live
through the winter is in American gen
eroelty. It will take thirty millions
of dollars to Iteglu to. relieve this sit
uation. ' *? .
t*rwldent Wilson has apiniated tp the
American jteople to hear the cry of
those, women and children, who with
out their natural protectors, are facing
starvation. Unless (here is a response
there Is nothing left for them but ex
termination.' There are more than a
hundred brave American missionaries
in Turkey, Caucassus and Peresla who
are standing by these wretelied suffer
ers,- -
Shall we help io save these thrw
miilUnis of Armenians ami other Christ
ians in these regions or by our failure
td'do something acquiesce in the policy
of extermination adopted by Germany
and Turkey?
Many lives were saved last winter,
and some of the warm-hearted people
of this community responded to a i>er
sonal. appeal and had a part in this
good work. ThLs winter we are as
sured suffering and death will be much
grealgt onleas immediate aid bo given.
WkP President saytK "in vieir of- the
urgent need I call again upon the peo
ple of the United States to make .such
further contribution as they feel dis
posed, in their sympathy and generos
ity for the ajd of these suffering j>eo
ples." He alBO sets apart November
lot h and 11th as special relief days.
According to information received
from the National Executive (Commit
tee the carefully computed proportion
ate share that normally shold be con
tributed by the town of Camden is
eleven hundred dollars. This may seem
a large amount to some and yet we
a re * assured that if every community
jravtv the full amount^ asked of it, it
would only then allow eight eenta a
day for the mulntalnence of one per
son. - -
If every one who is staying at home
and sharing little of the suffering and
hardship of this titanic struggle Should
"do his and her bit" for the relief of
Hufforing humanity we could then easily
do our full share.
The National Committee urges some
one m "every community to take Xhe
lead ill bringing information to the.
public and organising local committees
of relief. Conscious of the obligation
resting upon us 1 have volunteered
to undertake this work and to act as
chairman of & local committee. I have
appealed to my own congregation and
,now through the courtesy of the Chron
icle am making this first appeal to the
pegpitfj of Camden to answer this call.
First I would be glad for any per
sons who are willing to serve on such
a. 'local committee of relief to give me
theif names ot once.
V Second I)o not wait for the commit

kindly consented to receive contribu

The majority of these people are
even now barely subsisting upon roots,

an bid woman, sitting In the doorway
of a deserted .cottage, who, as she fock
