Mistake Costs Two Lives.

Sims cabled to the Navy Department
today that an American patrol vessel,
011 duty at night in the war zone, had
fired on an Italian submarine which
failed to answer recognition signals,
killing one otlleer and one enlisted
man.
Secretary Daniels at once sent a
message to the Italian ministry of ma
rine, expresing the deepest regret over
the unfortunate occurrence and ten
dering bis and the American naw's
sympathy for the loss of life.

Newberry cotton .mills, was crushed

was near him at the time and it is

ing September, the country's corn crop

and also despite an estimated loss of

spring wheat erofp will exceed last
year's. Other crops approach bumper
