Indian has l?een denied a request that
he he allowed to donate $50,000 to
the American Hed Cross fund. Har
nett. in/ spite of his wealth, which,
he acquired through royalties from
oil producing lands in the Indian
Territory, is classed as an incompe
tent bjfr the government and can dis
l>ose of his money only ur*>n the' ap
proval of the probate court or) the
secretary of the interior.

gation of the East St. T?uis riots, in
which thirty-seven negroes and four
whites were killed. Col. George H.
Hunter of the United States army, in
on the ground- with instructions to
make a full report. The rioting began
over labor friction. White laborers,
mostly foreigners, w-cre unwilling to
stand for the negroes being imported
to take their Jobs. Ninety-seven white
men were arrested Monday night on
charges of riot; but all but two hare
been discharged. The ring leaders are
still at lacge. It is estimated that
more than 20,000 negroes lived in East
St. Louis, bnt more than half of them
have left. -The homes of many-of them
have been deserted. There are, now
more than 300 National Guardsmen
on the scene, with strict orders to
shoot all disturbers of the peace, and
the negros* still remaining in their
homes are no longer being molested.
