The prevalent custom around the conn- j
fry of allowing llic fowls and young
chickens to roost under the house dur
ing the daytime, I- the primary rea
son why tleas are so abundant this
summer. It is absolutely impossible,
says the Poultry Husbandman of Clem
son College. to get rid of tleas on chick
ens when they are allowed to roost
under the house.
These "stick-tight"' brown tleas are
well known. When they once make
their home among a flock of chickens,
it is not long until the housewife finds
out what is killing her biddies and
causing the old hens to lose flesh. The
?diarp. piercing mouth of the flea is
buried in the face adjoining the base
of tiie beak, and also iu the flesh
under the beak. The irritation is so
painful that the bird frequently holds
if*> head to one side, or jerks it about.
