Mr. llaskel said he later had a talk
with tiie Inventor, who expressed the
ftviv that he would have to dispose of
his diioovery for a small price, owing
to the fact that tiie water and chemi
cal <H>miK)iind was susceptible of sim
ple analysis, and 'that although he
might imteut tho formula, anybody
.could obtain it from tho patent office
for very little money.
Ho told me he Introduced the chemi
cal that gave tho bitter almond odor
merely to disguise another odor that
might reveal the Identity of the more
important ingredient**, lie said the in
gredients were so cheap and common

Mr. Haskell said he was frankly
astonished by the demonstration and
felt that he had been a personal wit
ness to tl)o "beginning of an industrial
revolution."

vince me of what 1 had witnessed my

gusoline for $2,000,000.

he claimed he could operate an auto
mobile with a mysterious green liquid
he Invented.
But the Maxim Munition Company
figured the formula so good it has
agreed to ]>ay $1,000,000 in cash and
$1,000,000 in stock to^the inventor.
The process of manufacture, accord
ing to Knrieht, is very simple.
Four ounces of a strange chemical
mixture, green in color, is stirred into
live gallons of water. The solution
goes into the auto's tank and the
auto runs just as it would if fed with
gasoline.
Henry Ford visited the inventor,
Sr ho Is 70, and he came away convinc
ed that Knricht's discovery was genu
ine. it is said.
The cost of manufacturing the liquid
is about one '.and one-half cents a
gallon.

. Just after he announced bis dis
covery, Knrieht stopped making his
fluid because, he said, he didn't dare
to go to drug stores to buy* ingre
dients.
"I can't go anywhere without being
followed by detectives working for the
oil companies," said Knrieht.
Maxim company officials say they
will produce a substitute that will be
used by every anto owner and knock
the bottom out of the high price of
gasoline.
Governor Manning pardoned and pa
roled six prisoners Friday. Walter H
Jackson, who was convicted in York
eottnty of faceet, and Thomas W. Bish
op, of Riehland county, received par
dons, and L. E. Kempeon, of Newberry
county, George Gary, of Greenville
county, Jim Hancock, of Aiken, and Ed.
