The new armored motor battery,
the first thus far acquired by any na
tional guard organization In the coun

the line of march. There were seven
regiments of infantry, three of coast
artillery, a jxirt of the First cavalry,
batter left of field artillery, the signal
eorf?s, 'engineers and the motor car
battery.
Thomas A. Edison* notwithstanding
his (11) years, tramped along with the
stride of a man half his age, at the
heaed of a contingent of 22 members
of tlie naval consulting board of the
United Staff's.
"Such a parade ihhhIs no expres
sion," declared the inventor. The fact
that I marched In it expressed my
sentiments exactly."

AEROPLANE MAIL SERVICE HIGH
Sole Bidder Asks $45,500 a Year For
38-Mile Trip.

ment for aeroplane mail service on
woven routes in Alaska and one in
Massachusetts devoloi>ed only one bid
der, D. L. liyers, of Idltarod, Alaska,
offered to undertake service for a year
between Seward and Idltarod, a dis
tance of .38 miles, for $-15,500. The
Department will consider its a<**ept
ance.
Department officials attribute the
lack of bids to the fact that American
aeroplane manufacturers arc busy on
contracts for the European belliger
ents and most of them have sold their
products far in advance.
The cost of overland transportation
on most of the Alaskan routes is high,
in some instances as much as $100,000
a year. The Seward-Idifarod route
costs now $22,865. The Massachusetts
route from New Bedford to Nantucket
now costs the Government $23,000 a
year.
JOE GRANT IS EXECUTED.
Edgefield Negro Protests His Innocence
to the Last.
Columbia, May 15. ? Joe Grant, n ne
sro, was executed early this afternoon
at the State penitentiary. In an in
terview this morning Grant claimed
that he was innocent.
The negro was convicted several
weeks ago in the Edgefield county court
on the charge of murder and was sen
tenced to be electrocuted on April 15.
Gov. Manning granted a reprieve in
order that further investigation might

This morning a hearing was held be
fore the Governor, wiien it was re
quested that the sentence be commut
ed to life imprisonment. Just at noon
Gov. Manning telephoned to the State
"penitentiary that be would not inter

posed by the Edgefield court.
Grant killed n well known merchant
of Johnston In 1006 and escaped. He
was located in Philadelphia two yea it
ago by detectives. For two years the
negro fought against being brought
back to South Carolina. In an appeal
to the supreme court of the United
States he claimed that he would be
lynched if returned to this State He
lost his fight by all of the courts and
was returned.
