On becoming of age he was hired by the Ihfe James Drake, father of Jesse and John Drake, and stayed on the Drake farm a little more than a year. He then began farming on his own account on the RoblnsOn place In the upper edge of Abbeville county. A short time Inter he moved Into Anderson county and located three miles south of Honeo Path. Later he moved to the Oobb place which he purchased and where he lived until the time of his death This place is located three udles north west of Hontai Path and the town ship of that name. In 1WH) some friends announced Mr Ashley as a candidate for the house of representatives, from Anderson county, but lie declined to make the race tha' year. Two years later, in 1K92, how ever, he announced himself for the house and was elected. He served In the lower branch of the general as sembly continuously for 211 years, with , the exception of two years when he offered for the senate. He was de feated for the senate but offered again for the house hi the noxt primary election and was elected. Mr. Ashley was wrapped up in fanning, advocat ing and supporting everything that worked for the farmers' interest and he was made chairman of the agricul tural committee. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry Lanius of Harlowton, IMont., announce the en gagement of their sister, Miss Mary Hough, to John E. Swearingen, of Co lumbia.
