Italians. Artillery duels sjlll are in
progress on the Doherdo sector, and

rates or a bonus. The Literary Digest
mailing list showing the dates of ex
piration of subscriptions is never given
out to an \ one for collection of re
newals. Better send subscriptions di
rect, or postpone giving your order un
til >5'ou can make inquiry. If you have
reason to suspect that the members of
your community are being swindled,,
notify your chief of police or* sheriff, 1
and the publishers, and arrange an

which you can take such action joint
ly as may seem proper."
The caution was brought to the at
tention of tills paj>er by a woman who
said she had twice given money to
young men who were "working for
n scholarship" at some college, and
who offered short-term subscriptions
to certain magazines at cut rates. She
had received no copies of the maga
zines. Several times after this she
had been approached with similar
propositions, but hud refused to be
taken in. Complaint* to the magazine
otlices proved that her name had nev
er been given to the subscription de
partments of those magazines. It Is
n timely warning, applicable to any

Asoansion island.
The island of Ascension, in the At
lantic, belonging to Great Britain, is
one of the most unique places in the
world, in that there is no private prop
erty in laud, no rents, no taxes and. no
uso for money. The flocks and herds
are public property, and the meat is
Issued as rations. So are the vegeta
bles grown on the farms. When an
Island fisherman makes a catch ho
brings it to the guardroom, where It
Is " Issued by the sergeant major.
Practically the entire population are
sailors, and they work at most of the
common trades. The climate is almost
perfect, and anything can be grown.
The island is 8 miles by fl in size and
has a population of about 450. It is
230 miles northward of St. Helena and
is governed by a captain appointed by
the British navy.
