Polo at Camden this season Is be
ing looked forward to with antici
pated pleasure. The field on which
a great, deal of work was done during
the summer Is now as perfect as the

The field Is full size. Mr. Arthur P.

mounts from Midland. Texas, and ar
rives on the 15th. Mr. Edgar Y. Olaus
sen. of Westchester, who has been i

nouncements are out for the annual
tourney which Is scheduled for March

here this season, he going to Califor
nia with his family with Mr. Geo. C.

Had Been in Failing Health For Past
Eight Years.

munity was saddened last Friday morn
ing, January 7tli, when it learned of
the death of Mr. Barney E. Young,
which came at an early, hour. Mr.
Young had not been able to vviilk a
step In six years, having to use.n roll
ing chair to get about- In. He bore
.his a. miction better than the writer has
ever witnessed. The funeral services;
occurred on Saturday at DeKalb
church, services being conducted by
the Nov. S. H. Hatfield.
Mr. Young was 23 yon rs of age and
Is survived by his father and mother,
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph YV. Young, also
the following sisters and brothers:
Mrs. Maggie P.artield. Mrs. Liiey Jones,
of Columbia: Mr. Beufort -Young, of
Spartanburg: Messrs. Samrnle M., Sid

ta Young, of Westvllle.
Notwithstanding his affliction, Mr.
Young was an industrious and worthy
citizen. While he was not able to do
?my labor be did not depend upon' his
people for supi>ort. He would peddle
around on different articles and suc
ceeded in saving a neat little sum in
cash. He was never idle as long as ho
was able to go. and if it had not been
for his affliction he no doubt would
have been a valuable citizen to his
country. He was loved by all who
knew him.

leaves and grass from under hedges
and all clippings of hedges, all china

city council was written to fink for a
s])eciar meeting of the council with the
League in which matters pertaining
to this work be discussed and the aid
of. the council being greatly needed.

and attacked our beautiful privet
hedges to such an extent that we are in
grave danger of losing what is one of
our little city's chief charms, its miles
and miles of hedges.

Exjwrts at Clemson, Alabama and
Washington have warned us if we do
not take immediate stejw to exterminate,

months we will have no hedges, ami the
insect will then attack fruit trees and
other shrubs.

spray all hedges within our city and
vicinity and calculate cost i>er yard
and let each property owner pay. his

This ls a big undertaking for the

thoroughly It need not be done at all.

Wednesday morning to Inspect Co. M.
It S. 'C. Inf.. luster known to town and
county as the "iCershaw Gnarly."
' During the morning hours Capt. (^m
liain looked over and checked off all
public property of the company, and
expressed himself well satisfied with
Its condition, and method of storing.
Especial attention was given the ex
amination <?f the ritles and side anus,
their condition being favorably coni
ineuted on.
The Inspection of the company which
followed at 8 o'clock p. in., was at
tended by Mayor C. 11. Yates and a
number <>f prominent cltljcens. Tho
company made a very fine showing and
was lirst drilled in separate squads,
each corporal taking charge of Ills
sqnad. The company then marched
Into the street, where It went through
various movements, each sergeant tak
ing his turn iin commander, and then
| commissioned officers each took charge.

A Sorely Stricken Family.

works ago, died at her home a short
distance from town Wednesday even
| ing last and was buried Thursday in
the Wmily burying ground near the
home, the services being conducted by
Rev. It. M. DuBoae. Mrs. BowetS was
42 years of age and left five sons and
two daughters surviving. Two of the
children are l-anflned to bed at this
time witli pneumonia, but are improv
ing. It is peculiarly sad that the chil
dren have lost both parents in such a
short time, and much sympathy ia felt
for them. Their physician, Dr. Bras
ington, and kind neighbors are minis

the well known colored driver for

home in Kirkwood, after an lllnesa
from pneumonia. She wan a * highly
respected woman of her race, and al
though the weather yesterday after-,
noon was Inclement, the funeral at

attended. She leaves several children.
