THE COW AND HER PRODUCT.
Clemson College Weekly Notes For
Farmer and Dairyman.
? ? ;
(Tlie?e notes are prepared weekly
by the Dairy Division of Olemson Col
lege which will be glad to answer any
questions pertaining to dairying.)
The siqell of good silage is a cow's
best appetiser.
Remember always that food is the
only material wltfi which a cow can
make milk.
The first essential for making mom^y
In dairying is to eliminate all "board
ers" from the herd. '
?> * ? it,
Dirt iti milk moans trouble ami ex
pense to the producer, distributor and
consumer. Moreover, It means a lower
price.
About nine-tenths of the dirt in milk
has been found to be cow manuire.
Keep the cow and the dairy barn clean.
Milkers should have clean closed top
palls, clean, dry hands and clean
clothes. These are essentials in clean
milk production.
It is more necessary and advisable*
to groom cows than horses. Yet how
many farmers take this care of their
cows?
Milk absorbs odors readily. Do not
put it where it can be tainted by meats,
soap, vegetables, fruits or other strong
odored provisions. 1
Do not keep cream in rusty milk
cans, setters or buckets ; the cream
will not keep so well and may contract
an objectionable metallic flavor.
One of the best steps In cleanliness
is to whitewash the entire Inside of
the cow barn twice each year. ? Clem
son College will give formula for a
good, cheap whitewash. /
' To test milk for dirt, as soon as it
is received place it where it will l>e un
disturlKMl for one hour. Then, with
out disturbing the contents, lift the
bottle until the entire bottom can be
7V>*'
examined for sediment.
It Is the consumer's duty to flml out
whether or not his milk is clean. The
dirt in milk is matter unfit for^fmffiftlT
consumption and the consumer owes
it to himself and his neighlK)?s to de
mand good, clean milk.
America can learn many lessons In
dairying from little Denmark, which
can afford to import and feed our grain
and still sell its butter In com]>etltlon
with oUrs. Tnt ell 1 Rent dairy method#
are behind it.
Can't Forget It.

"No," replied the solemn-looking in*

"Well,- why are yon for the allies?"^
"Because," said the other with h pen
