the mite. It Is not liard to recognise
It, Infested leaven become deep red
on their upper surfaces. lly looking

ono can notice the red spiders moving
Mhout. The earliest sign Is merely a
hlood red si?ot on the upi?er surface
of the leaf.
The lower leaves .of the plant are af
fected first. The red spider spreads
hy crawling and is also carried hy
birds, domestic animals, Iworkiuen and
wind. The leaves that It attack* be
come distorted and brittle aud drop
off, thus weakening the plant. Sev
eral species of insects attack the rnlt
and In some seasons do much good,
but man myst do the greatest part of
the preveiitive work himself.
The red spider has over fifty food
plants, among the most important of
which are violets, jlmson weed, poke
weed, cowpea, bean, okra, wild black
berry, and other common plants. Vio
let and poke weed are especially dan
gerous because they afford winter1 food
for the insect. As a preventive meas
ure against red spider, keep down
weeds so far as practical and guard
especially against having violets or
poke weed anywhere near a cotton
field.
At the first signs of red spider, pull
up all Infested plants and burn them..
When large patches In the field have
become infested, use one of the red
spider sprays. Potassium sulfide and
lime sulphur solution are considered
the best of these. Potassium sulfide
may be bought at dpug stores and Is
used at the. rate of 3 pounds to 100
gallons of water. Lime sulfur solu
tion, unless m^de at .home as for
orchards, Is ,not so easily obtained
locally. It is used at the fate of one
gallon to 30 gallons of water, (this is
the -same solution that Is used for
scale in orchards.)
For smalt spots, a bucket pump is
sufficient For larger areas, use a bar
rel pump, if the plants are not too
large. Equip the pump with fine noz
zles, as when spraying fruit trees.
About one hundred gallons of the spray
is required for an acre. Three acres
can be sprayed with care in one day.
In spraying, be sure to spray thor
oughly the undersides of leaves and
also the plants nearest to the infested
i
spot. - '
Bicycles and Motorcycles Barred.
Postmaster General Burleson has is
sued an order which befcomes effective
cles and motorcycles by rural delivery
carriers in the dtschaifce of their duty.
A conservative estimate places the
number of routes now covered by this
class of vehicle at 8,000.
In addition to the bicycle and the
motorcycle being Inadequate to handle
the large amount of mail which is jnow
carried because of the parcel post, Mr.
Burleson declares it is very dangerous
for carriers to use this mode of travel.
He declares many carriers are killed
and Injured and that the government
must pay for those tnjuries.
Wherever possible automobiles will
be used to cover the routes now being
served by the motorcycles.
Hon. John McLaurin to Speak. ;
. We have been requested to announce
to~ the farmers and business men of
Kershaw and surrounding counties that
Hon. John Ii. McLaurin will make an
address at the court bouse in this city
Saturday, August 7th, on the, ware
house plan. It will be termed a regu
lar cotton rally and will be open to
anyone wishing to address the gather
ing. It is hoped there will be a largo

Governor Manning has appointed 140
champion coru growers from South
Carolina to attend the Universal Corn
exposition to be held in San Francisco,
August 5 and 0. All of these young
men won prizes in the various county
corn clubs. Those named from Ker
