ing to mule and borne raising.
??Special attention" (low not mean
taking the mare from her work aft
fouling time approaches and letting
her l?e idle a long period. On the
contrary such a 'practice Ih Injurious.
Pregnant mare* need oxerclse In the
form of llgl?t, Mteady w<?rk. This work
should be continued until within a
week of foaling and even in the hint
week a little exercise Ih desirable.
At the same time every precaution
must be taken not to put the mare un
der heavy strain, such us dragging of
loads through heavy soil, nor should
she be excited by the use of t.ho whip
or by shouting. One of the worst of
all practices is to jerk her suddenly.
Hacking should be avoided as much us
possible. 1
Let the food for the mare In foal
be carefully selected. It must be ylean
and sound, and altogether free of
inoldy grain or woody fodder or straw.
Clean mixed hays and whole rgalns
are good. Two parts whole oats, two
parts corn and one part bran, by
weight, with what hay will be readily
Cleaned up. Is a ration that has been
used with satisfactory results. Cut
down 011 the grain ration considerably
two or three days before foaling is due.
At the same time, increase the bran
slightly.
It Is very essential that the mare
in foal have a large roomy box stall.
This should be dry, well lighted and
bedded. Above all. it-must be Clean,
even to the point of having beCn treat
ed with a disinfectant. Immediately
after f?mllng. clean the stall thorough
ly and disinfect again. Cleanliness in
the stall may save the colt's life in a
case where an unclean stall would have
meant infection, disease and death.
Some clean grass lot. away from
sheds, barns. manure piles, straw
stacks and other possible sources of
dirt and germs, is also a good place
in which to have the mare foal. .
Shortly after foaling, the mare
should be given a drink lukewarm
water. The ration used during preg
nancv may be used after foaling as
well. Allow the mare to rest for about
I wo weeks before putting her back to
work.
