I>og Helps Milk Cow.
Mr. J. F. Jamison, who lives near
Gaffney, has a collie dog which Is a
most remarkable animal. Ills master
sends him to the pasture with In
v
structious to bring up only the cows
which are giving milk and Nip will
confine himself strictly to those in
structions, and then Mr. Jamison \ylll
tell, him to bring all the cows, and ho
will como driving theiu all to tlm barn.
In addition to this, when milking is in
progress, Nip will seize the calf around
the neck with his paws and hold it off
while the cow is being milked. Now
the above information was obtained
not directly from Mr. Jamison, but
from Sheriff Thomas, who is a truth
ful man, and anyone who doubts the
statement will be liable to arrest us
soon as he may put foot in Cherokee

RULES FOR PREPARING
EGGS FOR SHIPPING
Cleinion Poultryman Instruct*
Shipper* in Correct Meth
od* of Egg Marketing.
^ K C. Hare, poultry husbandman of
^hmmon College, has preimrvd a set
>f i'u Ion for ^ratling and lacking ogn*
?lIMl lift* distributed Copies of tllCSC
rules among tiu> fur morn on the cream
u?t egg routes of Cleiuson College In
the Piedmont counties.
" 'Though these rules," nnltl Mr. Hare,
"are designed part leu In rly for those
farmers who are eo ?npernllnir with uh
i>n the cream and oku ronton, many
?f the ru lea will he worth attention
from all men in the Ht He having mir
pliiH egKN at this time. There is a
steadily increasing supply of eggN In
South Carolina Just now and many
poultrymon will want to find quick
markets outside the state. Any one
having a considerable surplus to mar
ket will he told where to ttnd an im
mediate market for all his eggs if
he will write to the extension division
of Clcmson College.
"We are not instilled in asking the
press to print as news the names of
dealers who are ready to purchase the
?'KKs, as such matter belongs projierly
lu the paid advertising columns. Hut
wo will he glad to supply the.se names
hy mail to anyone desiring the infor
mation."
Such of the rules compiled by Mr.
Hare for his egg shlpjiers as wilt bo of
general interest are quoted below.
1- Kxrgs must not bo over six days
old. In cool weather they must bo
gathered at leant once a day and in
warm weather twice a day. This is
necessary in order to prevent horns
from sitting on the eggs and starting
incubation.
2. Ah Infertile eggs will keep bet
tor than fertile eggs, all roosters
should be killed at the cIoho of the
breeding season, May 1. Do not allo.w
any rooster to bo with the liens in
summer as if fertile, the eggs will not
reach the iiuirket" in good condition.
You can raise cockerels this year for
breeding with the hens next year.
3. Keep nests clean. Put frctto
straw in them frequently. This is
Important.
4. l)o not wash eggs. A damp cloth
may bo used to remove stains, but
tho eggs must not be dipped In water.
5. Pack only clean eggs in cases or
cartoons. Ship only full cases of 30
rto*en eggs. Do not ship half-fllled
cases. Place about one-half inch of
"xcelslor In bottom of ease and o>er
top row ? of eggs. J n case, to prevent
eggs from shaking in shipping* A
^nso should be made up of all white
eggs or all brown eggs. Do not m'x
colors. ...
There are a- number of other ?ug
'estlons in the list which apply only
to eggs that are collected on the cream
and egg routes. These eggs are ship
ped direct to New York as soon as
collected on the routes, in spite of
recent decreases in egg prices on the
big northern markets, due to the in
creasing supply in the country,- eggs
thus shipped are netting e<*>M<!erably"
higher prices than It pomlhlo 10 pet
in- local South Carolina markets.
"If ovory-patron," say* Mr. Hare
addressing the cream and egg route
natrons, "will cooperate with us iu se
lecting and shipping only tl c h.?t egg (t,
wo will establish a good reputation for
'CO* brand eggs in New York and will
obtain a premium of perhaps several
oents per dozen through till* reputa
tion,"
Any one having difficulty with bis
egg marketing problems 1# imited to
*eek assignee by writing to F, C.
Hare, CI em son College.
