The Commissioners of Public Works' ?if 'the <'ity of Camden have selected Mr. h. S. Maxtor to manage the new pow er plant, and he has already entered upon his now duties. Mr. Baxter is a native of New York, coming to Cam den four years, ago from Florida to take i-harge of the Camden Water, Light iV lie Co. plant and has most successfully managed it since that time, the service lias gradually grown better under his management. lliv friends' in Camden will be glad to know of ins appointment and that lie and hi* wife will remain in this city. He tells us that it will he only a short while until water and lights will he furnishyd by the new plant. Mr. Bax ter will work under the Commissioners who are Messrs. Henry Savage, W. B. My aim will Ih? t <? attend strict ly to the business of this ofliee regard less of consequence, and this office shall he run hy me if elected on busi ness principles of efficiency. and econo my. 1 believe in electing tin- man to any ofliee that is the most competent to fill the office. Don't put a man in office simply because he needs the money. If you (io you are robbing your county. If the candidate is needy go around among the good people and ask them to help him, but don't rob your county. It lias been said by some that this of fice was not so very important. A great mistake, my friends. The office is just as important to Flat Kock township as the Legislature is to Kershaw county. Your aim should l>e to send the very best men that you have to the legis lature. Would it make any difference to the other meiribers of the I ^gi la tu re what kind of men you sent. No, only this difference. : They could handle those that were incompetent more eas ily. Same is true of our representa tive that you send to your county board. lie ought to be an influential man. A man with sound judgment, and a lierson that has tin? ability to know what your rights are and the manhood to stand up for those rights. The du ties of the members of this county board is to approve, all claims sent in against the county, or disapprove if the claims be unjust, of course you want your representative to be able to ills cover any errors and corr??ct them. The same is true of all offices. Fill them with men of ability. We have the men If you will but only go to the trouble to find them. Friends,- we ought to all think more seriously as fo the kind of men we elect to office. We are all proud of an efficient, gentle manly officer, and other counties praise us if we have all efficient officers from the governor down to coroner. Let us put on our thinking caps and do some thinking for ourselves. The most of us have been letting others do our think ing. Now let us go to work gentlemen, and fill our offices with the right kind of officers.
